Strictly speaking, this isn't an instrumental album (it does still use choral harmonies and sometimes a children's choir, not to mention Annette on "Deeper Down"), but this is still very different from normal Nightwish fare because many tracks don't use any typical band instruments (or only use them sparsely). Brash metalheads with short attention spans might be bored by this music or say it's too maudlin and dramatic. Maybe that's true, but it IS a soundtrack, after all, and it suits a film very well.
I'm not even going to single out specific songs for very long because I thought they were all strong tracks. The music box on "Find Your Story" is a haunting opening sound. We hear remnants of "Meadows of Heaven" recycled in "Sundown," but it's so pretty that I don't mind hearing it reincarnated. "Wonderfields" has some lovely piano sections, and "Heart Lying Still" is likewise a marvelous piece of piano craftsmanship.
Please know that "Deeper Down" is basically "The Crow, the Owl, & the Dove." Since I have not listened closely to the original, perhaps they are different in instrumentation somehow in a way that I don't see right now.
Of VERY worthy note is the 8-minute mastodon "I Have to Let You Go," which is something of a crowning glory.Read more ›
Obviously this is not going to have a wide appeal, even to Nightwish fans. You have to be extremely into Tuomas Holopainen's compositions and the Imaginaerum film to get the most out of this. Nightwish fans looking for symphonic metal or expecting to hear female vocals (or any vocals for the most part) are going to be sorely disappointed, though this does make for some nice atmospheric background music when you want a change of pace.

This is the score of the film. There is some new arrangements of the music of nightwish. It brings an excelent atmosphere to enjoy the music. Don't expect anything heavy.Published 9 months ago by Plejanov V. Hernandez
One of the most beautiful albums I've ever heard. The depth and attention to detail is unbelievable. And escape for an Escapist.Published 19 months ago by Lazybones
