I'm still totally bummed that the film for this hasn't been released in the US yet, but I will say this - the soundtrack does not disappoint. It is fantastic. Captures the soul of the Imaginaerum album so well, and promises more with the movie. A must-have for any Nightwish fan, or fan of soundtracks and scores in general.

Tuomas Holopainen's deep love (and considerable talent) for instrumentals and more complex song arrangements has been years in the making. I'm not well-versed in every single Nightwish song, but the ones I like best are usually big orchestral songs ("Ghost Love Score," "Meadows of Heaven," etc.). After some years of waiting, he finally had a chance to really indulge in these skills and we are blessed to get an entire album of orchestra-heavy songs here!

Strictly speaking, this isn't an instrumental album (it does still use choral harmonies and sometimes a children's choir, not to mention Annette on "Deeper Down"), but this is still very different from normal Nightwish fare because many tracks don't use any typical band instruments (or only use them sparsely). Brash metalheads with short attention spans might be bored by this music or say it's too maudlin and dramatic. Maybe that's true, but it IS a soundtrack, after all, and it suits a film very well.

I'm not even going to single out specific songs for very long because I thought they were all strong tracks. The music box on "Find Your Story" is a haunting opening sound. We hear remnants of "Meadows of Heaven" recycled in "Sundown," but it's so pretty that I don't mind hearing it reincarnated. "Wonderfields" has some lovely piano sections, and "Heart Lying Still" is likewise a marvelous piece of piano craftsmanship.

Please know that "Deeper Down" is basically "The Crow, the Owl, & the Dove." Since I have not listened closely to the original, perhaps they are different in instrumentation somehow in a way that I don't see right now.

Of VERY worthy note is the 8-minute mastodon "I Have to Let You Go," which is something of a crowning glory.

The Imaginaerum Score is one of the best soundtrack albums I've ever in my life. It is writting in accordance to the band's release of the Imaginaerum movie. Tuomas Holopainen is credited for composing all the materials on the album. It demonstrates Tuomas' ability both as a composer and arranger of music.

Though not composed by the band Nightwish, this score for the film contains many of the motifs from the Imaginaerum CD making it very enjoyable to listen to. Very well done, highly recommended if you like Imaginaerum!

Not to be confused with tNightwish's 2011 full-length release Imaginaerum, 2012's Imaginaerum: The Score is just what the title implies - a purely symphonic score for the Imaginaerum film. Not symphonic metal, but an actual symphony. The actual Nightwish band's role here is next to none. As film scores go, this is pretty solid. It's along the lines of what John Williams does for the Star Wars or Harry Potter movies, though perhaps not as charming and definitely not as timeless.

Obviously this is not going to have a wide appeal, even to Nightwish fans. You have to be extremely into Tuomas Holopainen's compositions and the Imaginaerum film to get the most out of this. Nightwish fans looking for symphonic metal or expecting to hear female vocals (or any vocals for the most part) are going to be sorely disappointed, though this does make for some nice atmospheric background music when you want a change of pace.
