The Imagination Gap: Stop Thinking the Way You Should and Start Making Extraordinary Things Happen Kindle Edition

4.7 4.7 out of 5 stars 63 ratings

Everyone has imagination. Imagination helps us see new possibilities for the future, navigate in times of uncertainty, and spark new ideas. But most of us do not know how to use imagination to its fullest potential or how to harness the power of imagination to overcome obstacles. The result: our most important ideas and biggest ambitions never turn in to reality.

This is The Imagination Gap.

In this timely new book, Brian Reich shows us that imagination is the greatest natural resource available to humans and one of the most powerful forces in shaping behavior to make real change. He explains how the most creative thinkers, forward-looking entrepreneurs, and influential change agents, in every sector of our society, harness the power of their imaginations to achieve their goals, and motivate others to take action. He outlines how the strongest leaders show others how to use their imaginations to expand their individual and collective potential.

Review

“Brian Reich is a relentless advocate for change. His laser-sharp vision and ability to zoom into the essence and core of things is extraordinary. He has spent his life figuring out how to make the world a better place through his actions. Brian does not waste time; he always turns directly toward the most pressing issues. He is an optimist, never giving up on the opportunities around him and always sees potential to reshape the world. In The Imagination Gap, he explores a completely fresh angle on how to develop and pursue big, important ideas. Imagination is something we all have, but we have shut it down in fear of too much risk, in fear of looking different. Well, we shouldn’t. Brian helps us imagine what is possible if we didn’t.” -- Helen Sildna, founder of Tallinn Music Week

“For almost three decades, I have worked to create and advance some of the foremost purpose-focused initiatives undertaken by major corporations and brands. I have learned a lot, and shared a lot, in that time, and I know there is much more we need to achieve. To truly change the world, we must use our imagination as never before. Brian has issued a challenge that everyone - from executives to everyday people - can and should embrace. This book serves as blueprint to make extraordinary things happen.” -- Carol Cone - CEO, The Purpose Collaborative

“To get from point A to point B requires logic. To get anywhere worthwhile requires imagination. Imagination is the next big thing, and Brian Reich gives us the keys to unlock the power of our imagination. We need to explore new, ambitious ideas and this is the book to help us do it.” -- Erik Qualman, best-selling author of Socialnomics

"I wrote a book that explained how our ability to stay connected - constantly, instantly, and globally - was dramatically changing our world. Now, the world faces great challenges, and confronting them will require thinking very differently than we have to date. It is time to explore big new ideas, and develop new models and methods. That will require imagination. And this book provides the guidance we all need to use and apply our imagination more and better than ever before." -- Nicco Mele, Director, Shorenstein Center on Media, Politics and Public Policy and author of The End of Big

“We can’t solve problems by using the same thinking that created them. Imagination is a gift and not something to be suppressed. Brian helps us unlock the imagination needed to ideate and deliver real world solutions.” -- Brian Solis, digital analyst, anthropologist, futurist, author of X: The Experience When Business Meets Design

Reich, a strategist and writer for executive leaders at various organizations, argues that people aren't using their imagination enough and explains the role it plays in personal and professional life. He draws on interviews with scientists, entrepreneurs, organizational leaders, subject matter experts and practitioners, actors, filmmakers, comedians, inventors, and others, as well as media coverage, research, and his personal experiences, to describe how to close the imagination gap and create changes in behavior to expand the use of imagination. He explains the history and science behind imagination and how it works; the imagination gap and how to apply imagination; how lack of knowledge and the absence of leadership affects imagination; strategies for closing the gap; new ways of taking about issues and challenges to spark new uses of imagination; how using and applying imagination impacts decision making, beliefs and behaviors, individual and collective potential, and structures and rules; how a “war room” style approach encourages the use and application of imagination; the value of data using imagination as a driver for how to be smarter about the connected society; failure and imagination; and big ideas and questions related to imagination. Stoke imagination to make the most of tomorrow
One of the most disappointing things today is the lack of BIG thinking. Big thinking requires imagination, creativity, innovation. I read Brian's book because I have worked with him.off and on for years and really wanted to decode the way he thinks... imagines things. If you read this book you've taken step 1. If you apply his concepts, you will think bigger, better and move closer to being the person you're capable of becoming.

The Imagination Gap covers topics essential to the creative, business, scientific, and communications-oriented reader. I have thoroughly enjoyed the analysis and commentary by all the interviewees and the author. The examination of not only "what" imagination can inspire but also the "how" of getting to the freedom to create and expand your imagination is very well done. Brian's constant curiosity is one of the reasons why I always walk away from his books and his interviews on podcasts and panel discussions with a greater insight into the mind of exceptional leaders, creatives, thinkers, entrepreneurs, and artists. I must admit I am one of the lucky ones who was interviewed for this book and consider it an incredible honor to be among such respected individuals in their field. Even knowing the premise of the book quite well, I found incredible inspiration and insight from the other interviews and the chapters in this book! I would recommend this be included in any college classroom or even given as a gift for a new employee. This book is exceptionally well done and encourages us all to be creative, thoughtful, and adventurous while using our imaginations to guide the way to greatness!

I love this book. Brian Reich has always had a unique talent for looking around the corner at what's coming next -- whether it's business, or the media, or technology. This is a something wonderfully different: a look instead at something all around us and inside us that's just waiting to be discovered and deployed into an unstoppable force that can help us accomplish anything -- whether it's losing weight, getting promoted at work, inspiring our kids, creating the next big idea, or changing the world. At a moment when the headlines give us a million reasons every day to curl up in a ball and hide under the covers, "The Imagination Gap" offers instead a profound message of hope and optimism -- a timely reminder that we have all we need within us to solve our biggest problems and create a better future, if we just give ourselves permission to do so. Open to any page, and I promise: you'll find a story or an idea that will stay with you for days. Thanks for sharing your imagination, Brian!

I'm an infrequent review writer, although I depend heavily on the reviews of others. That should tell you something about my opinion of this book and the author, Brian Reich. Obviously, I feel strongly about the ideas contained in it and can vouch for how well organized and insightful it is. Having known and worked with Brian for almost a decade, I can safely say this book is the closest I have come to getting inside his mind. The caliber of the ideas he explores and assembles for you is only rivaled by how useful he has organized the chapters. I especially enjoyed the exercises and tips he baked into the end of each chapter to help the reader implement the concepts he shared. I'm adding it to my short list of must read books to recommend to my clients and team members interested in finding their own breakthroughs.

I've read each of Reich's books and you can most definitely see an evolution of his thinking from the first being hyper focused on media to the broadening of his ideas in this book on imagination. The consistent thread across them all is passion. The Imagination Gap raises what might be considered one of the most overlooked crises in humanity today - the use, strengthening and expansion of our individual and collective imaginations. After defining, examining and leading us on a journey to unthink how we think about imagination, Reich walks through the mechanics of how to save it. More than that, he offers tips on how to magnify its value both personally and socially. If you're like me, you'll find this book inspiring and - perhaps as he intended - you'll find yourself thinking bigger than before.

We bought The Imagination Gap for the our design studio's library at the request of one of our graphic designers. We work with clients everyday who are trying to make an impact in the world, and the imagination boost this book has provided has really helped us to help our clients achieve their goals. Sometimes it can be hard to change institutionalized ways of thinking, especially in large organizations, but I think everyone in our studio has drawn great inspiration from the personal stories in this book about how to use our imaginations to create change, both small and large. And we've passed that on to our clients with great success. Bravo! Highly recommended!

An excellent, practical book that seeks to nail down exactly what this mysterious "imagination" stuff is, and how we can cultivate more of it within ourselves. What makes this a particularly refreshing take is that the author doesn't offer systems or prescriptions (there's no "30 Day Bootcamp to Your Most Creative Self"). Rather, he offers something better: permission. For all the talk in executive circles about "blue sky thinking," it's great to have a deep-dive into what this thinking is all about. There are dozens of interviews with some really smart people, too, so you get a diversity of insights.
