The Imitation of Christ Paperback – December 4, 2020

4.7 4.7 out of 5 stars 459 ratings

The Imitation of Christ by Thomas à Kempis is a Christian devotional book. It was first composed in Latin ca.1418-1427. It is a handbook for spiritual life arising from the Devotio Moderna movement, of which Kempis was a member. The Imitation is perhaps the most widely read devotional work next to the Bible, and is regarded as a devotional and religious classic. Its popularity was immediate, and it was printed 745 times before 1650. Apart from the Bible, no book has been translated into more languages than the Imitation of Christ. The text is divided into four books, which provide detailed spiritual instructions: "Helpful Counsels of the Spiritual Life", "Directives for the Interior Life", "On Interior Consolation" and "On the Blessed Sacrament". The approach taken in the Imitation is characterized by its emphasis on the interior life and withdrawal from the world, as opposed to an active imitation of Christ by other friars. The book places a high level of emphasis on the devotion to the Eucharist as key element of spiritual life.

READ BEFORE BUYING!
Read this BEFORE buying: my copy had these BLASPHEMOUS words written inside the first page. I am returning this book TODAY. It says: “This book is a work of fiction and any resemblance to any person living or dead is purely coincidental ...” and more. JESUS IS NOT FICTION. Do not buy this copy and find a better source to spend your money on.

Good read. Enlightening and illuminating. I recommend this to all. Pretty easy read. Why must one write twenty words when all that needs to be said is done in two?

This book is full of God's wisdom, love and power. The author appears to have an intimate relationship with His creator and savior Jesus Christ. Many people on this earth over the last 2,000 years have chosen to believe Christ, by the prompting of the Holy Spirit BUT I see many of us fail to fulfill our God given destinies and lead truly successful Christian lives. This brother appears to have found the secret which is to believe, submit and obey Christ's commands. The rest falls into place, but our carnality is a hard thing to overcome. This book will give you profound insights in the wisdom and rewards of submitting to the Lordship of Jesus Christ, the Godly perspective on sorrows and adversities to help cope with the heavy load called: LIFE. Tips to becoming stronger in Christ. The devil comes into your life to kill, steal and destroy BUT Jesus comes into your soul, mind and spirit to give you LIFE and life more abundantly.

Probably read best as a devotional but a profound read and look back in time at Christianity as it once was... and still is. but not an easy or quick read despite the short length. To read this quickly is to sprint through a museum. Profound thought after profound thought. Reads like a conversation with the Maker.

Book was in fine shape, delivered on time.

I thought this book was good. Thomas seems to have been an extremely pietistic person, which seems to be the main emphasis of the book. There are parts it could be used as a devotional read, and even as a catechism.

The book was on a 2023 reading list for The Center for Baptist Renewal. Glad it was on the list. Take up and read!!

This book is life changing. I love this book so much, it has helped and supported me on my journey as a Christian. It confirmed to me that I'm on the right path and sometimes lead me away from the wrong path. This is a Christians must have book to help them on their journey. I can't say how much this book has helped me. The quality of work in this book is beyond words. A real gem.

Proverbs, Ecclesiastes and the New Testament all brought together in how a Christian life is and how it should be lived through prayer and real life experiences.

Perhaps the best book I ever purchased. I use it as a devotional, 1 chapter a day after I learned that this was also Saint Faustina Kowalski devotional.

The Imitation of Christ is one of the most beautiful and powerful books I’ve ever read and may be a needed voice for this age.
In an era of emotionalism, the heartfelt, emotional pleading of a self avowed sinner is a voice crying out in the wilderness. Deep faith, abundant prayers for mercy and a heart that cries for nothing but the presence of God. What a voice for the moment.

A deeply spiritual book which I appreciate more fully after listening to Eckhart Tolle's talks about it. Would recommend it to those who truly want to deepen their spiritual life.
