Editorial Reviews

"This book was on fire (despite its water focus). I love-love-loved the very sexy, strong, and sassy Miss Melusine Doré.She walks around covered in monster blood and mud and still exudesferocity." - LogicalSierra Reviews
"If all steampunk is like this, I'm on board! Hayoz did an incredible jobcreating a setting and characters that drew me in and kept mecaptivated. I can't wait for more!"-BookWorm Brandee

"The world was fabulous. The monsters, the steampunk, the dirt and grime of the poor places, this world has creepy monsters hanging out in themud waiting to pull you under. How cool is that?" -Goodreads Review

I generally don't like fantasy that features water creatures and/or adventures. For some reason, I just can't connect with Poseidon's realm and lot. I find mermaids, sirens, and their kin fascinating, yes, but them unrelatable. I mean, why would I give up being a princess, my beautiful voice, and uniqueness for a pair of legs all for a human prince that treats me like a special needs charity case?!

Now if not for Lexie of Unconventional Book Views, I would've passed up on Katie Hayoz's novella. First off, the cover, though really pretty, isn't your usual Steampunk. Next, IMMERSED is part of an anthology that features water creatures and monsters. Not really my cup of tea. Thankfully, I was in the right state of mind to try this one out, and I'm glad I did because I. Totally. Loved. IMMERSED!

I love monster hunters and the subsequent hunting. Throw in a pair of rivals and tight romantic tension, and you got yourself a good pot of sexy feats topped with blood and gore. I know it sounds disgusting, but for me it's heaven! Melusine Dore and Levi Cannon are golden together. Their love-hate-love relationship was a delight to follow, and though they are rivals, they do work splendidly together! I love the backstory between these two, it enriched not only the story, but their characters as well. And it surely made their romance all the more sweeter in the end.

As for the rest, KHayoz's 1850's Chicago is beautiful and very coastal here in IMMERSED. I'm very particular when it comes to the auxilliary parts of steampunk novels: the setting has to be more than the sum of its gadgets and automatons, the costume is not just limited to corsets and inventive accoutrements, and lastly, the dialogue and etiquette should echo the time period is in.

I would give this six stars if I could. No, that’s not enough. Immersed gets ALL the stars! I haven’t read the second novella yet, and I can already tell you that it won’t be enough. I’m going to need a lot more of these characters. This is the most excited I’ve been for a new series in a long time!

I originally wanted to read this book because I was working my way through the Falling in Deep Collection. Plus, I had heard good things about Katie Hayoz, so it seemed like the perfect chance to try one of her stories. I’m going to live dangerously and say that this was my favorite book in the entire collection (so far). I had no idea that it was steampunk too! Pretty much my most favoritest genre! The world created is a steampunk Chicago, where they live side by side with the creatures of myth and legend. Mermaids, vampires, werewolves… they’re all real, and Melusine is a monster hunter. Gotta love a kick ass female lead! Skirts are for sissies! Regardless of her tough exterior, you can tell that she has a softer side. Still waters run deep, and all that. Levi Cannon was immediately a character I could see myself falling for, but I also feel like his story has only just been skimmed. I hope that there might be an opportunity to hear some chapters from his point of view in an upcoming story.

I’m trying my darnedest to come up with something even slightly critical to say, but I got nothin’. All I can say is “Enjoy!”

A friend of mine showed me an advance copy of this book. I'm not normally a romance steampunk reader, but whoa Nelly! Sign me up for any further adventures of Melusine, the derring-do heroine with a weapon-laden corset and a major secret that keeps her apart from the man she loves. There are nice references to historical Chicago, lots of strange monsters, and some amazing steampunk contraptions.
Really, really enjoyed this romp.

Immersed begins with headlines in a steam-punk, fantasy version of 1850s Chicago. Our heroine, Melusine, hunts creatures for a living. When she is pulled into a reluctant partnership with Levi Cannon, her competition, sparks fly. Levi Cannon inspires delicious, mechanized, steam infused sparks. While some historical details of Chicago are used, Katie Hayoz does a wonderful job of crafting a new world. Her writing is easy to follow, but not boring. The action sequences are expressed clearly. The romantic scenes are light in tone, tastefully sprinkled throughout, as is any harsher language.

I'm already on to the follow up! Definitely recommended.

I had agreed to review this series before I knew that they were Steampunk. I hadn't read that genre yet, I was unsure I would like it.
Well let me tell you, I couldn't stop reading it! I devoured a book a day and was looking for more of it!
Melusine Dore is a monster hunter in the 1850's in Chicago, Illinois. She's good at her job and has the smarts and heart needed to know if a monster is a killer and deserves to be killed or not. Up and down her arms, she wears white ribbons. One for each kill, starting with the monster that was her father. Her father was the worst kind, a human monster that terrorized his three daughters.
Levi Cannon is her rival. He's another monster hunter, but he has no regard. He just slays the monsters. He's honing in on her territory and Melusine doesn't appreciate that. You see, Levi comes from lots of money and Melusine needs to work to support herself. She's mostly honest and very hardworking. I say mostly honest because she is hiding a deep, dark secret. One that could get her killed.
The pair of them are hired by a former suitor of Melusine's to kill the monster in the lake that is going after his boats. While using his submarine, Melusine realizes that the monster is targeting those boats because of her scent. She had been given a tour of both of them.
I really enjoyed everything about this book, from the characters, to the setting, to the writing. The story is amazing and brilliantly done.
Thank you Ms. Hayoz for turning me into a fan of your work!!
