I loved this book and cannot wait to read the next book in the series! The author is precise and to the point with her writing. The author knows exactly what she wants to say and where she wants to lead you and takes you on a journey of fantasy and magic. The characters are well developed and you quickly find yourself able to imagine all of the players in the game. This book is definitely written to provide the reader with a well-developed background and story line to build on.
I tend to read many books from many different genres; however, fantasy has always been a favorite. Immortal Descent is a must read, for anyone who likes the fantasy realm. I expect many more great books from Carolyn Walker and will definitely be on the lookout for the next book in the series.
Immortal Descent combines the biblical lore of angels and nephilim and births a new form of life, Lorns. These are immortal beings, yet can be killed. They have at least one superpower such as reading others’ thoughts or concealing their bodies from others, as well as superhuman stamina.
I enjoyed reading this. It was imaginative and clever with excellent world-building. However, I loathe cliff-hangers; I much prefer each part of a series to be complete in itself with a cohesive over-arching story.
While I enjoyed the pacing and sheer creativity of these beings and their world, I had a hard time diving in at first. There are many players in this epic tale, with many fully-fledge back stories. Everything happened to Ethan so quickly without the reader getting a full grasp of his character, then followed by many conversations explaining the rules of the game. However, I was hooked somewhere in the middle, once I had time to absorb the sheer brilliance of what Carolyn M. Walker has done.
This is clearly an origins story novel, setting the scene for many future installments. As each layer is unveiled and Ethan is drawn deeper into the secrets and wars within Lorn society, the book truly shines. Now I'm dying to learn what happens to Ethan, Rue and company in the sequel. A visionary re-imagining of Biblical proportions.
