Review from Jeannie Zelos Book Reviews.
I love Mary's writing so jumped at the chance to review this opening of a new series. We're plunged straight into the action with Katie returning home to find her 500 year old vampire lover headless and burning outside their home. She knows the police can't help as it must be vampires that killed him. Kyle always told her to contact an acquaintance Riker if anything happened and he wasn't available. Riker comes to help, he's surly and controlling, nothing like her wonderful Kyle, but they work together to find the killers. He's surprised at how strong and well trained Katie is, and when he tells her of the prophecy and that Kyle believed – and so does he- that it relates to her she's astounded.
There's danger at every turn, lots of action, vampire killers on the loose who threaten her friends, and tales about the prophecy for Katie to work at. She doesn't believe in the prophecy at first, but as the dangers increase, and her friends get hurt she begins to see that she can make a difference, and we see the nucleus of a team gradually forming who I think will be the core of the cast needed in future books. Riker starts as surly and rude, but comes to have a grudging respect for Katie, and she begins to understand him and his ways more too.
I thought this was going to be a fabulous five star read when I began but it fell down in one big area for me and that's the reactions of Katie's friend Jules when her boyfriend Joe was captured by the vampires. She knew he'd be tortured and unlikely to survive – yet she seemed to accept that too readily, having few tears, and eating and even going skating while they were thinking of how to rescue him. It's a major part of the novel and it just didn't work for me, and as Jules was one of the main characters it really jarred the novel and dropped it to a four and half star read.
Never the less the rest was perfect, Katie had just the right amount of determination necessary. I was worried that she was going to have a “ oh Kyle's dead here's Riker” insta-love moment but fortunately that doesn't happen :) her grief is real, and feels as it should, though with the passage of time and further involvement with Riker I’m hoping! I do love romance in a novel.
Priced at £2.99/$4.79 for 246 pages its good value and will join my keepers collection.
Stars: four and a half.

Mary Abshire’s stories pull me into the characters very easily. I fell quickly into caring for the secondary characters as well, and felt the concern for their lives.
** Katie…. The kind of heroine I love. Strong, determined, take no crap from an alpha, and full of revenge.
** Riker…. The introduction to the hero was intriguing due to the fact that Katie had loved her Kyle so deeply. How that was going to play out hooked me completely. I was concerned because this author doesn't necessarily give a happily ever after. This book did not have a cliffhanger, but the introduction to the series. So, we really only got a glimpse of Riker. Hopefully, more to come.
** The story…. The story started out with death, and the despondency and agony that comes with it. It was a love story, but not the typical kind. This was about a love so strong that its loss had to be revenged. There was a place that was tense and gut gripping. This story was a bit more gruesome and graphic then I'm used to, but it had my heart racing with the suspense. I felt the angst thinking there was another gruesome death about to happen. I felt the pang of sorrow, and the feeling of grief over loss.
Have you ever watched a movie that got you so excited over the fight, and you’re hero/heroine was kicking butt that you were jumping in your seat, oh yeah that happened to me while reading.
** Best line in a scene..."her heart hammered at her chest and intense feelings of rage and justice washed through her. She'd won for Kyle."
This was an excellent story about love, loss, and revenge. No romance, and no sex. Just mystery, suspense, and excellent writing and storytelling skills. Usually, I’d rather have love, sex, and all the heat. But, not this time.
My only disappointment is, I’m not sure when Mary Abshire will continue writing the series.
Lots of action, an interesting twist to human vs. vampire relations, and into the end a certain type of closure that leaves the reader hoping to read more.
