So glad I did!
On the outside, Dori Sahfi leads a full life. She has two little girls whom she dotes on, a horse farm which keeps her busy and although he's much older and somewhat distant at times, a good husband. Yet in the night, she stays up and looks at the keepsakes of the dream she lost in her youth, to be a ballerina. She feels restless and unfulfilled. When her husband hires a gorgeous and soft-spoken new farmhand, Michael, Dori immediately feels drawn to him. As their bond deepens, Dori is unknowingly endangered by Michael's past.
As Dori was struggling against her attraction to Michael, I was really hoping she wouldn't end up with him. Yes, yes, he's a gorgeous vampire and all, but she has a family, and when she SERIOUS SPOILER HERE- decides not to be with him, it really went a long way toward making me like her as a character. And then the accident happens followed by Michael using his powers to take control of her mind, no matter how kind and loving he was after that, I really despised him. I got that he loved her and he thought it was the best way to protect her, but I still thought it made him very very untrustworthy. I just KNEW she had to figure out what was going on. And even though she was getting this life she had always wanted, it all felt so ungrounded because she had no idea who she really was. The plot darkened steadily, but when the end came, it was still a shock.
Great book! Looking forward to the next!
But do you also want to read a novel that comes to an end with one of the love interests literally (and, I do mean literally) killing the other other by viciously tearing him into pieces from limb to limb and leaving chunks of his flesh scattered about?
I really didn't, and I am sorry I did.
On the other hand, I hate twilight with a fiery passion that could only be born in the deepest depths of an unimaginable hell dimension that frightens even Lucifer himself.
That being said, I LOVED this book. It is so far removed form the normal (these days) Twilight-esque, cookie cutter, disturbingly anti-female, cardboard, or overly flowery vampire novels.
This book is dramatic and beautiful on so many levels. Such a seemless blend of culture and beauty. The human element of the characters, their realness and vulnerability is so striking. The love story is told with such longing and truth. I found myself actually really caring about the characters and what happened to them.
Dorianna, the main character is so real. I am so thoroughly looking forward to the next installment of this series and to many more titles by this VERY talented author.
And the best news is that it's a series...SQUEEE......!!!! So there's more to come. Can't wait to read the next one!
