The Fate of the Universe Lies in Your Hands
The Immortals takes place in the distant future, in a world rendered alien by space and time. Perry Rhodan, the immortal Regent of Terrania, must survive a brutal attack on his home and the center of Terran power, the Solar Residence. But the most devastating assault is yet to come. Mondra Diamond, Perry's truest friend and greatest love, has been kidnapped by depraved combat robots, and the only clue left behind is her research notebook. Inside the notebook, Perry will discover the terrifying secret behind Mondra's seemingly innocent study of the Illochim, a powerful ancient race born of myth and legend. But are they a legend after all? Perry must travel across the galaxy, journey to the center of dark planets, combat beautiful and evil villains, and come face to face with the Illochim in order to discover the truth that lies behind the legend.

Until this game I had never heard of Perry Rhoden. But a Google search will reveal tons on history on the Hero. While at it base it seems to be pulp mag sci fi action thriller stuff, I'm really sorry we on this end of the globe mostly missed out on all the fun.
This game centers on the kidnapping of Perry's girlfriend (Google revealed it was also his former wife) and some sort of alien conspiracy involving a race that has been dead for thousands of years. The story, graphics, voice acting and music are all top notch. Unfortunately the game play is just horrible. This point and click in this game is old school as in Sierra On Line when they were their own masters. The bulk of the "game" is spent moving your cursor all over the screen. Or flashing an inventory item on a on screen character/devise to get some type of reaction Or manipulating your inventory to form a new inventory item. And since the game is on a rail, whoa be to thee who tries to join an object before its time or read a piece of info on a structure before the story has advanced for that piece of information.
Still, with a walk through in hand I have to recommend this game. True nuff, the game play is horrible but just about every other element of the game is great. And the loving detail that went into the visuals impressed me: True alien worlds that I could believe in. A marvelous story that starts out small and gets bigger as you delve deeper into events. And surprising professionalism from the voice actors from this small game developer. And while frustration reigned supreme during the playing of this "game", I kept playing anyway, just to see where it was going to take me next.
I would place this sci fi adventure game in the same league as Mission Critical (top of the heap) and Moment of Silence. At the time Moment of Silence was the most clumsy adventure game I had ever played but it was still a worthwhile journey. Immortals of Terra is even more clumsy but still worth the journey.
Perhaps some might argue that if a game fails at it basic functionality ( gameplay) how could it be considered a worthwhile journey? Honestly, I can't say. Every poor game puzzle I had to resort to the walk through made me curse the developers. And yet one look at another jaw dropping visual or inspired story event and all was forgiven. The game succeeded in making me interested in a sci fi story line I had never heard of before and now I want more.
Most adventure games tend to fall into one of two categories: story-driven, or puzzle-driven. This game is definitely geared more towards the puzzles. The storyline actually had quite a bit of potential, but it never really goes anywhere. You play as Perry Rhodan, who must try to rescue his friend after she's kidnapped by mysterious agents. Unfortunately, you won't solve this mystery by learning more about Mondra, or the titular immortals that she was researching when she disappeared. No, you find Mondra's diary early on in the game, and that...is pretty much all the exposition you'll get. There are entire sections of the game which have almost no relationship to the plot - seriously, Perry, if you're that worried about your missing girlfriend, maybe you shouldn't waste all that time trying to steal museum exhibits for no particular reason. (Yes, I know they come in handy later on, but...) And maybe I was just beaten down by the end of the game, but I can honestly say that I have no idea what happened there, except that it involved one of the most irritating game characters I've come across in a good long while. All I know is that he finally shut up, so I guess I must have won.
So why am I giving this game a good score? Well, if you're into puzzle-intensive games and don't mind the story so much, this is actually a pretty good game. Most of the puzzles are medium-to-difficult, and they're generally pretty logical. There is a fair amount of pixel-hunting to this game, but there's a snazzy scan function which highlights all the hotspots on the screen. That feature is becoming more common with these games, but "The Immortals of Terra" actually incorporated it into the sci-fi setting, and I liked that a lot.
Technically, this game is impressive. The backgrounds are absolutely beautiful, especially later in the game. Voice acting is also very good, particularly for Perry. I'll admit, having never heard of the "Perryverse" before, I was worried that Perry would be some kind of smug twerp, but darned if I didn't end up liking the guy. It almost makes me want to check out some of the books. The game also played without a single hitch, crash, or freeze-frame, which I really appreciate.
Bottom line: if you go into "The Immortals of Terra" expecting a science-fiction epic, you'll likely be disappointed. If, on the other hand, you're looking for intelligent puzzles with a bit of sci-fi sheen, this game is definitely worth picking up.
If the loading time weren't so horrible and I could play it on my newer laptop, it would be a lovely game. The puzzles are fun and there is enough information to solve the puzzles without a hint system. The "scan" feature, which shows click-able items on the screen is also very helpful.
I would rate this game 4-5 stars if I could play it on my laptop.
