Editorial Reviews

From the Author

A trilogy never entered my mind when I began the story of a boyhood rivalry but it took three books to write its origins, development and the eventual outcome.  Good-hearted but emotionally neglected Bill was going to need all the resilience he could muster to weather the threat of war and the threat of his manipulative cousin. I knew how it would all end, but this would be many years later.  It took the first book to explore the beginning of this relationship, to set it within the adult tensions that allow it to develop, and the historical circumstances in which all the characters are living. This detail was necessary for the last section of the story to be fully understood, and this is the material of the final book of the trilogy.

Book Three brings the boys from adolescence to adulthood in London's post-war austerity. Kenneth, now sharing Bill's very home, works hard to ensure he is top dog in every way. Bill feels short-changed by his family's admiration of Kenneth. Kenneth loses no opportunity for lording it over Bill. When the situation explodes it is the result of all the years of tensions. "Impact" refers to the effects of the boys' rivalry. The fall-out hits not just the two boys but all the other characters too. I wanted to end the trilogy showing how they both deal with their own hardships, as well as exploring their maturer understanding of their own personalities and responsibility for their current situation.

About the Author

After her career as a psychologist, Rosalind turned to writing fiction (instead of reports) once she retired. The inner life of her characters drives her plots whether the genre is humour, historical or crime, and there is often a dark edge or thought-provoking ending. She loves creating complex characters of all ages. Her avatar is a distortion of Picasso’s painting. Surely he would approve of Girl before Word Processor? Rosalind lives in the South West and spends her non-writing time on family, sculpting and painting. --This text refers to an alternate kindle_edition edition.
