When Malaysia Airlines flight MH17 was shot down by pro-Russian rebels in July 2014, the world wondered if a cure for HIV had fallen from the sky and disappeared among the burning debris. Seated in the plane’s business-class cabin was Joseph Lange, better known as Joep, a shrewd Dutch doctor who had revolutionized the world of HIV and AIDS and was working on a cure.

Dr. Seema Yasmin is a Pulitzer Prize finalist, Emmy Award-winning journalist, medical doctor, professor, poet and author. A fiction fellow of the Kundiman and Tin House workshops, she is the author of five books including Muslim Women Are Everything, Viral BS: Medical Myths and Why We Fall for Them, and the poetry collection, If God is a Virus. Yasmin trained in medicine at the University of Cambridge and in journalism at the University of Toronto. She served as an officer in the Epidemic Intelligence Service and is director of the Stanford Health Communication Initiative, clinical assistant professor of medicine at Stanford University and visiting assistant professor of crisis management at UCLA's Anderson School of Management.

In an eloquent way, this book tells the story of the HIV pandemic, a devastating pandemic that took the lives of millions; as well as the story of Dr. Lange, a scientist and physician who made it his personal and professional goal to fight the pandemic. This book speaks of life and death, hope and despair, cooperation and rivalry. It delves into the history of HIV, the inception of the disease, as well as the powerful social forces that influenced the spread of the disease; while simultaneously delving into the story of a hero with all his flaws and complexities.

The Imperfect Dr. Lange is brilliantly written and intriguing. Dr. Yasmin does an excellent job of conveying the information in a relatable way.

Dr. Seema Yasmin weaves a wonderful story about Dr. Joseph Lange, an important 20th and 21st century figure fighting HIV/AIDS first in his native netherlands and then globally. The importance of Dr. Yasmin's book is that she raises the profile of a scientist and physician who never had the visibility of say a Bono or other global health celebrity. Yet until his untimely death on the ill-fated Malaysia Airlines flight shot down over eastern Ukraine, Dr. Lange was one of the most important contributors to war on global AIDS. Dr. Seema Yasmin uses her unique background as a former CDC epidemiologist, physician, and journalist to fill a gap and provide a vivid portrait. We urgently need more modern histories of doctors and scientists to help counter the rise in antiscience we're now witnessing in North America and Europe.

The Impatient Dr. Lange reads a bit like a mystery, with a body count right from the top. But substitute the whodunit with a different sort of killer, HIV/AIDS. It's a well-paced page-turner, and the science is clearly drawn context for what is a wonderful feat of story-telling.

Dr. Lange towers as a compelling and brilliant figure, presiding above a racist, sexist medical and scientific establishment. It's a fitting and urgent tribute to one doctor, but what it really does is transport you around the world and into a global laboratory and community of HIV super-fighters. Well-written and with such verve!

Dr. Lange is a compelling and compassionate figure, a reminder that you don't have to be perfect to make a difference. But just as important as the tribute to the man himself is the relevance of the his message. HIV has faded from headlines but it is far from a nullified threat, and its story just as compelling to history buffs and political junkies as physicians. Dr. Yasmin does a great job conveying the nuances of a worldwide epidemic in a relatable way, and no matter your familiarity with HIV/AIDS there is a lesson for you in this book.

Tragic tale, could have been better conveyed.

With so much potential to write such an interesting piece of work about an amazing, tragic man, it really fell down for me sadly. Perhaps it was my own bias, as my friend’s parents died on the same flight, but I did not find it well written. I felt it could’ve conveyed more about his tragic legacy, which will hopefully not be lost. At least his heroic work will feed years of research to come.

This summer I read a fascinating biography about Dr Joep Lange – the story of a Dutch doctor who dedicated his life to finding a cure for HIV. Tragically his life was cut short by the downing of Malaysian Airlines MH17 over Ukraine in 2014. In just 175 pages, the author Seema Yasmin, herself a doctor, relates a compelling story of not just Joep’s life but also a gripping biography of the development of the HIV virus itself - ‘The story of HIV, the biggest pandemic to hit humankind, begins in 1492 with a chimpanzee living in south-central Cameroon’. Is it ‘an ancient virus’ or actually ‘a part of the 8% of human DNA that is viral’ – or perhaps its ‘a pernicious by-product of colonialism’. Read the book to find the answer. Not afraid to pull her punches Dr Yasmin goes to the heart of the inequalities of HIV treatment exposed by and campaigned against by Joep Lange himself which makes him such a remarkable character. Highly readable, a book where popular science meets biography, this book will leave you enlightened about HIV/AIDS and inspired to follow in the footsteps of medic-revolutionaries like Joep.
