There was some stereotyping but nothing that intruded too harshly into the story. This is an NA story, so making the college-aged kids needing to learn to be independent (in the case of Jensen) made sense. And, on the flipside, Lucy developed, as well, and learned that it's okay to not always be in control everything. Both characters, in the process of falling in love, developed as individuals and together, as a couple.
I found these characters and the story refreshing. I also got a few good laughs out of it. And though I usually hate first person POV, this author made it work. I would have liked to be Jensen's head a some crucial moments in the story but I think the author showed what he was thinking very well.
Lucy is a scientist in every sense of the word. Everything for her is a sense of questions with researchable answers. She's been studying science since she could speak and it's literally the way she lives her life. Clinically and to the point. She has no room for emotions because she doesn't quite understand or feel them. And that was why this book was so funny. I mean you won't be splitting your sides but you'll get a laugh out of this for sure.
Watching Lucy struggle with the emotions she doesn't understand, and making friends with people she didn't know she needed--it was all pretty funny. What also made me really like Lucy and her story was that there was nothing wrong with her. Not that she was perfect but she didn't have any problems with her family. She wasn't harboring some crazy secrets, and she had a solid background. How often does that happen?
Then there's Jensen. He's a supposed man whore. He's the guy all the girls want--but he winds up being someone not even I expected, and it was so refreshing. Without giving anything away, I think readers will be pleased to see there's more to Jensen then being your typical NA bad boy.
It was just a refreshing and decent story that didn't have to do much to be good. There was no insta-love, or a bunch of drama. It was just a good story with good characters, and I can't recommend it enough if even for just not being what all the other books are.
Lucy was different. At the start of the book it too me a while to truly get into the jive with how she was. She was very smart and very articulate. As the story goes on she really shined, she finds her self, in a manner of speaking.
Jensen was..... I'm not sure. He has such a huge heart; and while some people don't understand that I could see it from the start. I really liked him.
While Jensen was a part of this, and we needed him for the story to progress, this story was all about Lucy, her becoming a person that can feel emotions.
The plot was interesting. We have a super smart woman that is pretty much socially awkward. Watching her come into her own and experience new things was truly amazing and an enjoyable ride.
Overall, the heroine was very very different then others that I've read. But that's what makes this book so amazing. It's out of the box, clinical at times, but the underling story is beautiful and a fun thing to read. 5 stars #2OCCJD
There are a couple of editing problems that could easily be fixed. "I've either pushed or ran.." "Ran" is the wrong verb form. It should be pushed or RUN. The author was apparently confused by the dual verbs.
There's also a sentence that doesn't make sense: "No matter how much I wish it could take it back." Perhaps just a typo, but an editor or a cold read by the author should have caught this.
