Editorial Reviews
A penguin stands in the middle of a scorching desert, far away from its natural habitat. This mirrors composer Arthur Jeffes' journey and exploration into a new musical territory. Penguin Cafe have evolved into something of their own at the hands of Arthur who started the band in 2009 with the continuation and homage to his father's legacy, the late Simon Jeffes' Penguin Cafe Orchestra. Now, their upcoming album echoes reminiscent sounds that embrace the new.
Predominantly self-composed, the new album also features covers of electronic works by Simian Mobile Disco and Kraftwerk, along with a re-working of Simon's "Now Nothing." Arthur has developed from the traditional folk and jazz heritage Penguin Cafe Orchestra is known for into another realm of blissful ambience and dance music, recreated using strictly acoustic elements.
Includes printed inserts and download card.

I realize that a live recording turns out differently than something produced in the studio but I wonder if something went wrong with the CD. I don't think of myself as an audiophile but I didn't expect to hear such a difference. On NPR's web site the sound is bright and has lots of depth but listening to the same songs from the CD seemed to have less depth and the brightness varied.
This album, however, is a much stronger affair. The first two tracks evoke the classic sound of the PCO, the recording quality is rich and the pieces contain intriguingly complex layers which bear repeat listening. Control 1 (interlude) slows the pace and arguably comes too early in the album. Franz Schubert is a nicely quirky piece. Half Certainty and Rescue are more cinematic than anything that I've previously heard from the Penguin Café but sit nicely in their place. Now Nothing is a new version of a track from the Broadcasting from Home album. I'm not sure this version lives up to the original.
The album as a whole works well and certainly checks all the boxes of what anyone would ask of a Penguin Café album. Eminently listenable without being disposable background music.
In resurrecting the brand, Arthur Jeffes has set himself the unenviable task of continuing to provide the world with the high quality, idiosyncratic music associated with the Penguin Cafe. On this album, at least, he seems to have found that fine line between creating something new while successfully embracing his father's vision.

This new one has, however, not been off my turntable since it arrived. The sound is more ambient and atmospheric, and doesn't really attempt to go for the quirky sounds prevalent on the original PCO, with some nods to the world music sounds of the original band. My favourite track is 'Rescue', a suspenseful, string driven epic that leads nicely into a beautiful SImon Jeffes track (Now nothing).
This is a fantastic record to just put on and chill out to. The one star review is way too harsh.
If you have not already seen it the 'Desktop' series on You Tube has three of the album's tunes played live in a bookstore with audience and again is remarkable listening
Highly recommended if you like instrumental tracks that are the musical equivalent of changing the sides of the hinges on a friend's doors. Quirky and fun!
