In this book I enjoyed getting to know Brent and Bethany better. I loved how their budding romance revolves all around humor, true crime and the silliest bird jokes. It's so refreshing to read romance based on emotional chemistry, as opposed to just sex, or the ubiquitous love/hate banter so common in modern romance—where the hero and heroine seem to hate each other one page and fall in bed the next one.
But in addition to the usual elements of great romantic comedy, this story touches life-threatening illness, strained family relationships and alcoholism. Those moments of deep raw emotion when the characters need to transcend their sufferings not only add to the experience of reading the book, but also make the laughter more vivid when it returns.
As an additional treat, it was great to meet again some of my favorite characters from previous books. Gwen, Marc, Ted, Freya, Sam. Even insufferable Mr. Crawford. By now they feel like old friends to me.
I can't wait for the next book on the series. In the meantime, I'm going to have to go and re-read some of my favorite previous ones.
I definitely recommend this book.
A poor-but-harworking gal who is on a sex hiatus meets (accidentally *sleeps* with) a sexy jock who has a cock-blocking secret and daddy issues. Hilarity ensues.
I love how the humor doesn't overpower the romance and how the romance doesn't overpower the plot. Perfect balance!
Brent is a pro athlete, who suddenly may no longer be able to pursue his career due to a hidden health issue. Adding in abandonment by his longtime girlfriend, he no longer sees that he has much to give anyone in his life.
Brought together through sharing an apartment of Bethany's friends, where Brent also lives during the off season, the pair begin to spend time together as friends. While both are unwilling to trust the other with their deepest secrets, they begin to forge a close bond of friendship that morphs into something more for each of them. Afraid to admit their attraction and possibly spoil each other's only supportive relationship, both Bethany and Brent try to keep their relationship firmly on friendly footing. While others around them conspire to keep them apart, the pair continue to be drawn closer together through their developing friendship.
When their attraction can no longer be ignored, our couple move out of the friendzone and into a romantic relationship. Physically one-sided due to Brent's health issues, the time they spend together is still steamy and filled with intimacy. Their past failures may yet work to keep them apart, since neither can trust the other completely.
Brent is a wonderful romantic lead - focused on Bethany and wanting to bring her nothing but happiness. Bethany is a bit more scattered - at times wanting to be closer to Brent and at others pushing him away due to her own insecurities. Her quirkiness and his kindness and passion make for an enjoyable romance read. Fans of romance with some mystery mixed in will like this story.
Four stars for this friends to lovers romance.
