Editorial Reviews

With rich vocals atop quiet looped waves of white noise, filtered synths and sparse thuds, Montreal songwriter Devon Welsh aka Majical Cloudz, is one of 2013's most unique and essential voices. His 2012 Turns Turns Turns EP, an audacious distillation of Welsh's ideas that brought his vocals to the fore. Citing Elliott Smith and Arthur Russell as the two biggest influences on his songwriting. Though they stand stylistically apart from other artists in their Montreal scene - which includes Grimes, Doldrums, Blue Hawaii, and others - Majical Cloudz are proud beneficiaries of it camaraderie.

This is a really fantastic album. Very moody and the guy's voice is sharp and haunting. I could listen to it over and over again. Don't know much about the technical aspects of music, but it sounds well produced and the sound mixing is awesome. Highly recommend!

Not your run-of-the-mill alternative rock. Far from uplifting, lyrics are nonetheless profound, e.g., "Bugs Don't Buzz"---seems like a silly title until you get the words. Probably my favorite disk of 2013.

I love this album.
The simplicity of vocals and minimal electronic intruments are so stripped down that all is left is Devon Welsh raw emotion. Annunciation, flow and inflection so subtle you'll be surprised when the words "if life could be forever one instant/would it be the moment you met me?" makes you to cry. Some tracks are so restrained you hold your breath waiting for it to break, and it never does. Others will become hopeful anthems of triumph.

Haunting, maybe disturbing in some ways but this will be one of my favorite CD possessions. I love the melodies and creative use of chorus this guy (I'm told this is basically a one man band) uses, a mix of Crash Test Dummies and Moby in my own humble opinion. If you like the song "Childhood Ends" which is what I hear the most on Sirius XM, give "Silver Rings" a try as well, another beautiful track on this CD. Impersonator is definitely worth the alternative fan's attention if they haven't already found it.

The vocals are hypnotic, the instrumentalism is magical and the lyrics are equal parts philosophical and tongue-in-cheek. This album always inspires me when I listen to it.
