The idea behind this short story is really great. The story telling possibilities are vast on this one. I just felt that the story telling itself was disjointed. It felt like I was listening to a description by a person so close to the subject matter that important information would periodically be accidentally omitted, those tidbits having materialized in the mind's eye of the speaker but never verbalized. This made the flow of the story suffer in such a manner that I was never really drawn in. Lastly, there were no real moments of humanity between the characters that the reader could relate to emotionally. I kept waiting for it to 'get good' and really take off with the premise. On the other hand the author seems to know tech, deriving really great plausible results from the theoretical application of technology. I'll likely look for other things by this author and see if I enjoy those more than this particular one.

This book makes for an interesting hypothetical thought exercise but has very little entertainment value. It is also a little depressing seeing as magic is usually a fantastical and fun tool of the imagination. Forcing magic into harsh reality does not create a pleasant reading experience.

To avoid spoiling the plot, I'll just say that Cowie had an interesting and very innovative idea for bringing magic to the world. The same framework easily covers religion as well -- gods who actually answer prayers if you ask in the right way. Recommended reading.

Saw almost no character development anywhere in the story. It was narrated in a very one-dimensional, nearly monotone format. This could be a great book, or at least the basis for one, but it needs a tremendous amount of added development.

My Grandpa had the ability to cover several topics in just a few words. It seems that Kim Cowie has this same ablility, but with significantly more finesse. Its already been said by others, but my only complaint is that I wanted to keep reading!
