Implementing World Class IT Strategy: How IT Can Drive Organizational Innovation 1st Edition
Purchase options and add-ons
With rare insight, expert technology strategist Peter High emphasizes the acute need for IT strategy to be developed not in a vacuum, but in concert with the broader organizational strategy. This approach focuses the development of technology tools and strategies in a way that is comprehensive in nature and designed with the concept of value in mind. The role of CIO is no longer "just" to manage IT strategy―instead, the successful executive will be firmly in tune with corporate strategy and a driver of a technology strategy that is woven into overall business objectives at the enterprise and business unit levels.
High makes use of case examples from leading companies to illustrate the various ways that IT infrastructure strategy can be developed, not just to fall in line with business strategy, but to actually drive that strategy in a meaningful way. His ideas are designed to provide real, actionable steps for CIOs that both increase the executive's value to the organization and unite business and IT in a manner that produces highly-successful outcomes.
- Formulate clearer and better IT strategic plans
- Weave IT strategy into business strategy at the corporate and business unit levels
- Craft an infrastructure that aligns with C-suite strategy
- Close the gap that exists between IT leaders and business leaders
While function, innovation, and design remain key elements to the development and management of IT infrastructure and operations, CIOs must now think beyond their primary purview and recognize the value their strategies and initiatives will create for the organization. With Implementing World Class IT Strategy, the roadmap to strategic IT excellence awaits.

- Reviewed in the United States on March 31, 2024This book helped me think about two new ventures I am starting. We are in the pre revenue stage but have built a cost structure that we need to reevaluate. It also enabled me to think more strategically about my role as the director of a university program.
- Reviewed in the United States on January 19, 2015Hats off to Peter High for a very clear and practical method using his OGTM for a successful developing and implementing of an IT strategy that engages the whole organization. This book draws from his years of experience as a consultant to the successful traverse through the risky waters of IT strategy with several cases from well known corporations. Most IT projects fail (70%) for a number of fundamental reasons. If you are a CIO or other exec trying to couple your IT with your business, this is clearly a great place to start with his 200 page recipe that is straightforward and easy to adopt. At the time of this newly published book (Jan 2015), this is only the tenth review and they are all 5 stars. That is a commentary of how good a book this is. Thanks Peter.
- Reviewed in the United States on September 5, 2017The book walks you through the importance of having a corporate strategy including IT, how IT can be positioned as main a Strategy focal point. The book goes into describing the process in building your IT strategy, also includes some good examples.
- Reviewed in the United States on June 26, 2019This is a good, short primer on developing a solid IT strategy. Starting from the premise that IT, as a cross-functional entity, is in an excellent position to collaborate with operations (the business), High introduces a solid methodology for articulating and cascading strategy from the top down. He also convincingly states that IT must not call the business a "customer."
- Reviewed in the United States on September 17, 2019The book is a good knowledge repository for IT strategy. But it also looks like someone has written a thesis. I was having a tough time trying to maintain focus. The readability, in my opinion, is not great. I have started the book a long time back. But was not able to move beyond a few pages. I was reading online. I love books which have practical examples and gets to the point and guides on what to do, when to do it and how to do it. I am looking forward to reading some better books on IT strategy
- Reviewed in the United States on April 5, 2015This book helps with a good methodology to use to stimulate conversations with business units on strategy that can be inputs into the overall IT strategy and budget. I really liked the book and its recommended processes.
- Reviewed in the United States on November 1, 2014Thoughtful and practical approach to creating an IT strategy. Useful real world examples from IT leaders who have successfully pushed their colleagues to think about the IT element of their business strategy.
- Reviewed in the United States on December 20, 2017Using this book for a course on IT strategy and found it very practical and useful direct appliance. And as a former CIO and IT strategist I can say that it is hands-on but yet easily digestible.

Written for CIOs, the author emphasises the need for IT strategy to be developed in concert with broader organizational strategy. With a focus on the concept of business value, IT strategy is able to drive business strategy. The author outlines the contents of a good strategy document and suggests how it should be communicated. A good read.

Horace McPhersonReviewed in Canada on April 19, 20155.0 out of 5 stars Really Good
This is a really good book. It proves that Peter High has been at this for a while. Every page oozes with extremely good, practical and actionable information. If you are the head of an IT function or even part of the IT leadership team and you have been timid about undertaking some strategic planning, try reading this book, I could not put it down. It gives you a step by step pragmatic education on how to put a good strategy plan together. Peter High gives you hands on advice on how to go about doing this. The real life examples are powerful and the end of chapter take-aways are invaluable. The book has eight chapters and every chapter educates you on some good concepts. The book is better than a graduate level course. I read Peter High's previous book "World Class IT", another keeper, and was not surprised that the follow up volume would be equally as good or better. Fantastic job!!!

XavierReviewed in France on August 22, 20164.0 out of 5 stars Très utile
A BuyerReviewed in the United Kingdom on May 11, 20191.0 out of 5 stars Another IT Management Book Of A Bygone Era
Very disappointing book. Half of the book tries to convince the reader an enterprise architecture team will deliver value. After 20 years in IT I have yet to meet an enterprise architect of any use. Modern companies instead are favouring decentralised architecture and agile delivery principles. If architects are not hands on building product and their knowledge is based on experience 2 years ago, I’m afraid it is already out of date.
