Since independence in 1947, India has basically muddled through, turning confusion and adversity into varying degrees of success. From his experience and perspective as both a business and political correspondent, John Elliott examines how this came to be. John Elliott came to India in 1983 to open the South Asia bureau of the Financial Times. Since then, apart from six years in Hong Kong, he has lived and worked here. From 1995, he has written mainly for The Economist and Fortune magazine and now writes a widely read blog on India and South Asia current affairs.

Rather dry to read, but brings one down to reality

Rather depressing at times to read this, but the author has had the experience and the reach to provide background anecdotes to what is happening in India that is keeping it from reaching its potential. Objective, real and depressing is one way to sum it up.

Decent book though a bit drab

This is an exhaustive work on things which any avid Indian newspaper reader would know - corruption, India's myopic foreign relation policy etc. I guess the target audience of the book would be western readers eager to understand some of India's problems. The stars I am giving are for the initial chapters on 'Jugaad', the commentary on 'Chalta Hai' attitude and some facts related to the 90s reform which were new to me. But the rest 70% of the book is really a summary of the past 10 years of the nonsense things which have happened in India. The author gives no real answers to these problems, I would have loved to read a foreign opinion on how to set things right.

If you live in India, OR do NOT have Indophobia I suggest you spend time on something else, What a depressing doozie.!

The Author is a merchant of doom and gloom, if you live in India and you read the book,you will either want to jump off a cliff or move out of India, ...seriously, those are are only two choices. I went to https://ridingtheelephant.wordpress.com/ and saw the author's older columns too, looks like he's been perfecting the art of spreading the gloom for the past 30 years. He basically thinks that every government that has ever come to power in India has done NOTHING,(He's has handpicked with a lot of care, every example where the system has failed) trust me, it's that gloomy.

Everyone knows that not everything is rosy in India, but the author has swung the pendulum too far in the other direction.He thinks congress is incompetent and corrupt while BJP is basically just marginally better but is going to turn India into a religious intolerant hotbed. You might say, well some of it is true, and you would be right, if you live in India then you know, that SOME of it IS TRUE, but the way the author goes about describing its problems, you would be asking your self, if things are so bad, how did India survive for so long ? Why aren't people rioting everyday, everywhere for everything ? Why are the women and Dalits and minorities still alive, because clearly they should have been long dead, killed by upper caste male Hindus. (They could read this book and decide to commit mass suicide, ...yup, its that depressing)

Everything he says he can be justify as his point of view (and like I said earlier, he has pinpointed certain examples you can't argue with), and it's a free country, so yeah no problems with that, but he's not provided any sufficient counterfactual to what he is saying. If you live in India, you know that things aren't that bad, infact for most Indians, things have gotten infinitely better for today's generation when compared with their parents and their grand parent's generation . You wont find any of that in this book.

If you live in India or are not a person with Indophobia I suggest you spend time on something else, this one is written by someone who's got a bit of an axe to grind and can't figure out why this country hasn't imploded into a million different pieces yet.

Dull and obsolete

Dull and obsolete. India has one of the highest growth rates in the world. But the author misses an essential part of the Indian psyche -Indians do not desire to dominate the world nor others. As a people they are vey family and friends oriented. They are not trying to resurrect the glories of Islam, Soviet Union, rule the waves, gobble resources, promote their ideology etc. Under such circumstances why does he think Indians would like to be an aggressive global power.
The Indian way is best described by the following events; Xi from China has been there, as has Putin and as has Obama. Then the Indians have ventured out to Dubai etc and signed treaties with muslim countries much to the irritation of Pakistan.

Written about yesterday's India, not today's or tomorrow's.

Measuring India against what HE thinks India should be is typical of brits with an axe to grind with its former colony that is fast overtaking it. This book was published during the last throes of the old Congress government and is totally irrelevant to the India of today or tomorrow.
