Captain Callum Archer is normally a play by the rules kind of guy. His job demands certain policies and protocols are followed otherwise criminals get off on technicalities. However, his personal life is far more lenient when it comes to breaking rules - here the line becomes a bit more blurred around the edges. His infatuation with Jules is enough to entice him to bend the rules and see if there's potential for a real romance with her.
Before anything concrete can happen between Jules and Callum there's a bank robbery with eerie parallels to the series of unsolved crimes she left behind. Combine that with the sudden appearance and romantic pursuit of a man whom she'd questioned and discarded as being the mastermind behind the crimes. Consulting Callum about her suspicions results in two things. 1. He accepts her theory and agrees they need more that circumstantial evidence in order to pursue the suspect, and 2. Callum confides that he's strongly attracted to her and wants her far removed from any dealings with the man responsible for such hideous crimes.
Unfortunately for Callum his pride and protective instincts are going to have to take a backseat because the only way to pry any information out of their suspect is by planting someone in his life that he'll confide in. Since he wants Jules, she's going to have to be putting herself on the line and dating a psychotic killer with the hope she can gather enough evidence to nail him for his crimes - all while secretly seeing Callum on the side.
Isabel Roman's new release IMPROPER CONDUCT is a thrilling read that held my attention from beginning to end. Jules obsession with the series of crimes and her emotional upheaval over the entire situation is riveting, especially when she goes head to head with Callum about her plans regarding the suspect. I couldn't help but feel for Callum, as a police chief he has a job to do and has to trust in his officers' skills, but as a man he wants to ensure that Jules doesn't succumb to the killer's seduction attempts. I'm not normally big on suspense novels, but I have to admit I loved everything about this story - from the mystery of how the killer is getting away with his crimes, right down to the romance between Jules and Callum, even the crimes themselves left me in a state of awe. This is the first book I've read by Ms. Roman but I can definitely say it won't be the last. Her next book, SINK OR SWIM doesn't have a release date yet but it looks just as appealing as IMPROPER CONDUCT so stop by her website and check it out.
