Are bassists performers? More than you know...

Ostensibly a compilation of interviews with bass players, you get the impression very early on that something quite different is actually going on. That impression turns out to be correct.

The Interviews only rarely cross into the standard territory of general-public magazine-rack "musician oriented" periodicals. If you want to know what brand of strings Gene Simmons uses, you have come to the wrong book.

This is the book that starts from the surrealistic proposition: "What if an interview weren't a recitation of standard questions and mere recording of the answers? What if it were in fact a bit of performance art? A bit of dialog theatre in which each player knows that the other knows that it's all just an act?" That proposition takes you to some pretty interesting places and opens some unexpected windows into personalities that are already a bit larger than life and unusual because we are, after all, talking about artists here. And make no mistake, the Rock Star bassist musician is not the only artist in the room - interviewer/performer Wictor is an active and essential element here, painting with words and weaving a conversation that frequently takes everyone on an unexpected journey.

You will learn things about musicians and the industry in this book that you will learn nowhere else. And you will learn that this is not the book you thought it was going to be. A must-read for anyone wanting insight into how and why musicians think like that...

A lot of introspection here, and agonizing, and emotion. But most of all, honesty. This is a fine book, exploring the rewards and punishments for creative artists who try to retain some integrity while making a minimum wage--and sometimes succeed far beyond their expectations, in ways that leave them feeling ambivalent at best. You don't have to know anything about bass playing to enjoy this book. You just need an interest in music.

Tom Wictor's "In Cold Sweat" is a collection of interviews with four highly accomplished bass players (Gene Simmons of Kiss, Peter Hook of New Order, Jerry Casale of Devo, and Scott Thunes of Frank Zappa's band) that he conducted during his time as a contributing writer at Bass Player magazine. I was an occasional reader of Bass Player in the '90s, and remembered the Scott Thunes interview as one of the truly memorable articles in the magazine, so I was naturally drawn to this book. One might easily dismiss this book as a simple re-packaging of previously published interviews in a brazen attempt to make a quick buck, but rest assured, there is much more here than just that, including additional Q&A segments from the interviews that never got into the magazine and preludes and prologues from the author about his personal experiences with the interviewees. The result is that one not only gets to know the subjects, one also gets an intimate feeling for the interview process – from banging pots and pans constantly interrupting one session to another subject lovingly cradling the tape recorder throughout his interview to the contentious exchanges with a third that ultimately lead to a lifelong friendship – that transports the reader to the interview, making it an event instead of just a bunch of questions and answers. If you are a bass player or devoted musician or music fan, you should definitely read this one, but even if you’re not there is something here for everyone.

Thomas Wictor is quite possibly the best writer that Bass Player magazine ever employed: This book shows why. This book is actually the full transcripts of 4 interviews that TW conducted while in the employ of said magazine, and unlike the fluff writers/editors that they've had since - sorry guys but it's true - TW actually asked tough questions that delved beyond the usual "What strings do you use" type. If you're a bass player, there is no reason this book shouldn't be on your bookshelf...

My reasons for buying this were twofold--the Simmons and Thunes interviews were the largest, and the ones I was most looking forward to. By and large, not for bass guitar purposes, but just to see what stories might come out of either interview, based on length.
I was fairly disappointed with the Gene Simmons interview; his penchant for needless self-promotion has been overdone countless times, and it's only when then-KISS guitarist Bruce Kulick comes briefly into the conversation and forces Gene to answer questions properly instead of plugging the latest mediocrity the band has put out.
The Scott Thunes interview was one of the best I've read in recent years, due to its decade-spanning reach. He discusses at length his tenure with Frank Zappa, the problems with the '88 tour with other band members, subsequent work with Andy Prieboy (and a very brief cut on Stu Hamm--rightfully so, and you'll know what I mean if you read it). Thunes has a wonderfully fresh (if jaded) outlook on both the music industry and the roll the bassist plays in it.
