The air pressure is great and otherwise the chair works well, but the back massage is the most important for me and so I am disappointed....
I love it, though I would recommend looking at the high end zero-g brands out there, and testing them before spending $8k on this.
Inada is really good, but there may be better for the money.
1/29/2014 - I've had the chair for two years and still love it! I know it's pricey but I haven't regretted the purchase. I use it almost daily.
10/11/15 - I'm still using my Inada Sogno Dreamwave Massage Chair on a daily basis...it's part of my nightly routine. When something interferes and I don't get to use it my body lets me know the next day. I absolutely love the massage I get on my legs and feet!
2/16/17 - I'm sorry for taking so long to update this posting! I'm still using my chair on a daily basis when possible...I only miss once or twice a month. After five years, I think this is remarkable for a massage chair. I'm still extremely pleased with my purchase and do not regret the money I spent.
I am writing my review for the Sogna Dreamwave, which is what I have purchased and what this Amazon product is listed as. My purchase decision was based purely on the stellar reviews I have read on this product and the fact that this is the about the only brand that began in Japan and is still made in Japan. I am sick of owning Chinese crap that breaks, despite how well the American vendor says the quality is. Way too many moving parts in these things to risk quality woes. Quite simply, this is a luxury item with luxury benefits.
I did not purchase this item on Amazon. I bought it at a local authorized distributor. I was able to get it at 20% off due to it being the "older" model. It came new in the box; not a floor model. I also extended the three year warranty to five years as well with the same 20% discount. I purchased the unit for my wife for a Christmas present. I don't normally buy high dollar items such as this, but this is something that I know my wife will enjoy for years and that makes it priceless. I did the research. This is known as the most complex, yet trouble free chair on the market.
I paid for the white glove setup. It was delivered the next day and set up in my home by the delivery crew. It is thin enough to fit through a standard doorway, but it will take two people to carry the main unit. I recommend un-boxing it outside if stairs or tight corners are required. The delivery guys showed me how to put it together. It is very easy, but requires a slight amount of manual dexterity and good lighting to put on the two thumb wheel nuts. Smaller hands help. It can be set up in less than 30 minutes.
After set up, it powered right up and was ready to go. It came with an instruction manual, two additional shiatsu shoulder pads, child lock keys, and two back pads in various thicknesses.
My only previous experience with a massage chair was on the newer version model that was on the showroom floor of the store where I purchased mine. I normally have gone to a masseuse to get a massage in the past.
This thing is amazing. It is a little underwhelming at first with the basic programs. BUT.. Once you flip open the lower panel on the remote and start trying out the different massage functions and patterns, you start seeing where this chair REALLY delivers.
COMPARISON TO A MASSEUSE:
It is in no way a direct replacement for a strong deep tissue massage at a spa, given by a good masseuse. You just cannot get that kind of centered pressure from a chair. The people who say it gives a weak massage must not have tried adjusting the roller height with the remote. It will give you a firm enough massage to put you within pain threshold. You feel the massage rollers and get squeezing and pressures in multiple places at once. The stretch function does stretch your torso similarly as a Chinese massage. You can isolate where you want the chair to work on at the click of a button. A masseuse does things this chair cannot do, but similarly this chair does things a masseuse cannot do. I walked away feeling just as relaxed. On average I would say this chair does just as well as the top 75% of human massages I've had.
COMPARISON TO THE NEWER DREAMWAVE MODEL:
I found very few differences. The arm fit and overall arm massage is slightly better on the newer unit. For skinny people like me, it feels like it was made to accommodate a slightly wider torso with bigger arms, so the bicep massage pressure isn't quite as intense. The forearm airbag on the newer unit is perfect; where this one doesn't quite hit the entire area.
The air pumps on this one seem slightly louder and slower.
New model has more heat, but not much of an issue with me.
The rest of the features of the newer model are unimportant to me, but if you want the details they can be found on the Inada website.
BIGGEST PLUSES SO FAR:
-Fit & finish is amazing
-Leg and hip and lower back air massage is amazing. This thing has the perfect amount of pressure for the feet at just the right spots. Great after a long day standing or walking.
-Lower back roller pressure is great.
-Ability to customize the massage to whatever I want, and many options between the rollers, vibration, and intensity.
-I have read a few reviews that say the roller massage is a little on the weak side. With the back pad removed I find the roller to be plenty. I normally request a very strong massage at parlors. The trapezium pressure is a little on the weak side and requires the head cradle to be in the optimal position, but I don't know how that could be improved in a chair that is made to accommodate many sizes of people. Kinda hard to replicate a strong trap massage on a machine. I did find that flipping up the head cushion and relocating the massager heads to my neck area worked much better.
-Hand & forearm massage on the Sogno is a bit underwhelming compared to the newer model for those of us with shorter arms & narrow torsos.
-Only other con so far is the fact that it is bulky and requires two strong people to lift and adequate care to move. This is simply a characteristic of these chairs.
I strongly suggest to anyone who is interested in this unit to go try a floor model at a local retailer. Do not just go through the preset massages. Open the lower panel on the remote and play with the different roller sequences and 3-D pressures, air pressures, vibrations, roller adjustments, ect. Manual mode is where this thing truly shines. It will find that sweet spot and work on the knots with a few button presses. Also, try it with and without the removable back pad installed. You will know pretty quick if this is something you enjoy using and if it is worth the investment.
I've only been through a few sessions so far. I will write more after I have some more experience with the unit. Each time I use it, I figure out more features and enjoy it even more. My wife absolutely loves it as well.
I've done a ton of research on these. If anyone has any questions, feel free to ask.
