The small volumes look like disk drivers with a back up of each type
Inateck USB 3.0 to IDE/SATA Converter mounted both logical volumes from an Apple 20 GB fireball hard disk last opened in 2006 on a OS X 10.12..4 MacBook Air (11-inch, Early 2015). One Volume was formatted in OS X and the other in MacOS9.2.1. See screen shots of Yellow colored Had Disk Icons. At that time you might decide to boot the Mac in MacOS9.2.1 to run some applications that didn't do well running in emulation mode under OS X.I the USB bus it shows up in the Apple Menu/About This Mac/ system report / in the USB 3.0 tree as several different volumes. See screen shot of system report with the USB 3.0 tree selected. The small volumes look like disk drivers with a back up of each type. I tried for most of a weekend to get a Sabrent USB-DSC9 USB 3.0 TO SATA/IDE to work and finally gave up and ordered the Inateck USB 3.0 to IDE/SATA Converter. Sent the Sabrent USB-DSC9 back under Amazon Prime home US mail pickup. At least that part of the experience was easy.

I also use Inateck's SATA docking station and it is fast and works reliably. I bought this product for the IDE adapter (here's it's long amazon name: "Inateck Universal USB 3.0 to IDE/ SATA Converter Hard Drive Adapter with Power Switch for 2.5"/3.5"SATA HDD/SSD & IDE HDD Drives Optical Drive, Support 6TB, Include 12V 2A Power Adapter and USB 3.0 Cable").

I love that it has a power switch, so I can connect everything up then turn on power.

Tested this with 3x IDE desktop 3.5" hard drives (HDD) and 1x IDE CD-Rom/writer optical drive. All worked (except 1 HDD but I think it itself is broken--that HDD didnt work with any other adapters I tried either). With the CD-Rom drive, it could play and write, and open the door via eject windows menu click. However, it could not do advanced operations from professional audio program Pro Tools, but most people won't experience that.

As other reviewers have said, the 4-pin-to-molex power cable is very short. For my drives (3.5" desktop) that's all that was needed, cuz it was a very short distance from the adapter power to the hdd power.

BUT BE CAREFUL: REMOVING the 4-pin power cable connector from this adapter was HARD. It has a plastic locking mechanism that's really deep. Had to pry the plastic down with a small flat-head screw driver to unlatch it (of course, without letting the screw driver slip and jam right into the body of the adapter). I've done it several times now, but it's still challenging. Suggestion: study this locking mechanism before you insert it so you'll know what you're doing when you try to remove it.

Note, you dont actually have to remove the power cable if you dont want to. I store this in the box it came in, and so it wont fit unless the cable is removed. But apart from that reason, I would not have to remove it.

Removing the molex side of this cable was easy. It's a tight fit, but it can be wiggled out with just fingers.

The USB cable and power (to the wall plug) cables are not that long, maybe 3 feet. That means it's hard to find a spot that close enough to the PC to reach the USB port and close enough to power outlet to plug it in. If your PC is on the floor and you have an outlet or power strip near by, as I did the first time I used it--it works. If your PC is on the desk, and the power is on the floor, as I had my second time, it wont reach. I put the disk and adapter on the desk, and had to plug the adapter's power wall wart into an extension cord to reach.

BTW I completely ignored the backup software and the CD that came with this device. I would not trust it (altho I trust Inateck). No drivers were needed for my Windows 7 Pro PC.

Very happy with the purchase. It seemed like it took a bit of time to get to me (not the manufacturer's fault; it was an Amazon-fulfillment item) but my situation wasn't a rush, urgent thing and honestly, the functionality of the item is so good that it was worth the wait. I had two PCs die on me (not the PCs fault either; it was me trying to squeeze out every last bit of life and running them past their limit... moment of silence...) but that said, there were some items that I needed to get off the hard drives. I honestly thought it would be a pain because for an external drive that the casing blew out and we had to pry it out of, the IDE/SATA converter that I once used to get data from that drive was a pain so I was expecting the same, but this item was easy. Just set up and power up and hook up. Then I was good to go. I even got that old external drive and hooked it up and was able to finally transfer the last of the files that were on that drive and in good time. So it was 3 hard drives that I was able to salvage files from this evening. That makes me happy.

I got this to try be able to check out some older IDE type hard drives I have around the house. I have a number of EIDE drives and I wanted to check them out and see what was on them. (In the pass, I have lost some programs due to not being able to check the drives out as I didn't have IDE interface on the newer systems I got. I do know that I've lost a few things that I would like to get back, if possible.) This item was suppose to allow IDE drives to be accessed and read. It works for some of the drives but it seems to be sold mainly as a back up solution, At least, according to the directions included. It will read some drives well, but others not so great. Again Seagate drives were a problem and I had a Maxxor which read fine at first but after a few reads stopped being seen by the OS. (This might be that Win 10 updated itself while I was starting out this on my system and that may have messed me up. All I know is it would not read the Maxxor after that.) I also ran into the problem, that drive would be "
seen" but Win 10 couldn't read anything on the drive just the fact that you had a drive there.(No format type, capacity, etc.) I 'm saving this item for future use but when it works it's great.

Would have given this 5 stars if it worked for transferring data from Hitachi Desktar IDE hard drive to my IMac running windows 10 in parallels virtual machine. The Inateck device would register as a drive letter but when the IDE disk is attached, the disk is not read. Windows reports that I need to insert a disk. SATA disks work flawlessly so that's a the reason for my 2 stars. I have a greater need for the IDE hard drive function. If indeed it is supposed to function with windows 10, I would assume the unit is defective. in either case I will be sending the unit back requesting a refund.

Revised review. I did send the unit back for a refund which I got hassle-free. The company sent me a new unit to be sure it wasn't a defective unit originally. I received the replacement unit within a couple of days. I set everything up according to the limited instructions and plugged in the IDE hard drive. Still wasn't able to see the drive. The reader device registered but Windows Explorer said to insert media. Hmm. I was not giving up. I went to the jumper pins on the IDE hard drive and set them in various configurations. I found that some of the really older hard drive's jumper settings need to be in a special configuration. I finally found the correct jumper settings and voila, the hard drive was showing up in windows explorer. Now, it works great with both SATA and IDE hard drives.

Ok so bought this drive because I have a old Seagate 3.5" SATA HD, a Hitachi 2.5" SATA HD and a WD 3.5" IDE drive, and this converter indicated in the comments that it would work with everything and it did, now bought SATA drive gave me access right away, and my current administrator rights on my PC took over on the Drive, now the WD at first would not show up and that was because of the Cable Select Setting, it's the small pin that you install to mark the drive as master or slave, once I removed the pin the drive showed up, certain folders I couldn't open because I didn't have permission but once I changed the ownership to my admin account that I was using on my PC then BINGO I got access to everything again, I was able to recover lost photos on crashed PCs, this converter worked flawlessly.

I managed to make it work by plugging into an old computer which has WinXP as OS (same a computer that broke down and that I wanted to retrieve files from. I am relieved.

Does it work with Win10? I don't know.

I am just grateful to have found a solution.

This item doesn't work under Windows 10. Also my HDD must have come from outerspace...

Here's the message I received from Inateck support:

"Sincerely thankful for your kind patience. However, we could not find any information about the model of your 4 hard drives after checking. Could you please try other kind of hard drive for double check? Also, please do not install A1-OTB when running win 10. Would you possibly uninstall the OTB driver on your computer? As the OTB software is not necessary and no work when using win 10. It will be compatible with win 7 and below operating system. Hopefully you could understand."

This adapter works as expected. I have tested with multiple drives.

I wish the adapter had cables for the SATA drives because it does not sit perfectly flat on the bottom of a drive and I do not like having the device hanging of the SATA port. The other option is to have the drive held by the SATA connectors. This device is lighters so I will let the device hang off the drive and take care to not break the port.

Some IDE drives do not fit well with the power cable being too close to the device, but it works well enough to get files off old drives or from failed computers.

I did have some drives that did not work, but I think they are old raid disk members and would need to be erased to use as a single drive.

I have an old IDE hard drive I have kept for years and I was able to access its data easily with this adapter. It was plug-and-play.

There are 3 cables to connect:
    - Power Cable (plug from wall into adapter)
    - 4-pin cable (plug from adapter into IDE hard drive
    - USB cable (plug from IDE hard drive into the accessing computer)

I don't know what the BACK UP button does though.
