When Marcus reveals to the group that he’s considering dating, it shakes Delaney to his core. He’s nowhere near ready, not when he feels on unstable ground with his teenage son and has vowed not to uproot his life again. Even if it means pushing his own needs aside. Even if Marcus’s announcement stirs something else inside Delaney, something he’s kept at bay for twenty years, and he suddenly sees their more tender moments in a different light.
The first time Marcus holds Delaney during a particularly rough night, the ache in Marcus’s chest, the one he tries hard to ignore, only intensifies. And when their slow-burning friendship sparks into a blazing fire, they finally indulge in each other to satisfy their needs. Marcus knows the arrangement is only temporary, but he feels a rightness with Delaney he can’t easily explain.
Soon enough, their longing becomes difficult to ignore. But love after loss is terrifying, the familiarity with pain and despair too close to the surface. To fan the flames of their connection, they’ll not only need to make room in their hearts but also take an enormous leap of faith.

But the first 30% was allll story set up. Their pasts, their relationships with their wives, how their wives died, what it’s been like in the years since their wives died. It was A LOT of internal dialogue/story set up and I just wanted the *current* story to get a move on.
This is a slowwww burn. And once it started, it was still just… agonizingly slow to really get going. There is A LOT of focus on mundane tasks that have nothing to do with the furthering of the plot. It just… dragged.
So I’m still waiting for the story to get a move on AT 85%!!! EVERYTHING was packed into the last 10%. Like…. Tying up everything talked about in the first 90%, was jam packed into the last 10%.
This had potential because the connection between the MC’s was really sweet. But when newly out Delaney is still questioning holding hands in public with Marcus in the dang epilogue…? I just… meh. Wanted the HEA to be satisfying and it really wasn’t. This took forever to get through with no real pay off.
Working through grief is difficult, no matter the type of grief. I have been working through a process of my own, and there was a line that Grant, the coolest teenager ever, said that made me have that good, cathartic, soul cleansing cry. He states that grief is just love with no place to go. This line is one of my favorite lines in any book I’ve read. Also, Grant is an amazing human who absolutely made this story so much better.
To Delaney and Marcus-the slow burning fire between them over their shared experience and friendship was so beautiful to watch. Having them realize that their intimate moments meant so much more and how they handled that in their own reckoning with grief was so well done by Lee. It was also wonderful to see older main characters so well done.
When I first finished this book, I had no words to describe it. To describe how it helped to heal a part of my soul. The only thing I wish was that I could read it for the first time again. It is truly so well written with so much heart and compassion. Marc and Lane will make you fall in love, but remember Grant will steal your heart too!
I thoroughly enjoyed this book. While the subject matter of widowhood isn't necessarily an easy one, Christina Lee strikes a fine balance between the grief and bereavement and how deep that feeling of loss can be alongside more lighthearted moments between the main characters as well as their interactions with family members and those within their grief group. Lane has the added responsibility of being a solo parent to Grant, and the feelings of insecurity he has with regards to his parenting skills as compared to those of his late wife had my heart squeezing in my chest. As for Marc, I swear, the guy is someone everyone should have in their corner, whether it be as a friend, partner, son, or brother. He is the sweetest! He was patient and understanding and loved beyond measure. I appreciated that these two took their time navigating the newer nuances of their relationship and that they tried their to remain open and communicative. Special mention to Grant, who was wise beyond his years, and to Ruby, who made me tear up. Incandescent receives five stars.
The first time they kissed, touched, and just held each other brought all the feels. The interactions between their families, between Delaney and Grant, between Marc and Grant--all done exceptionally well and all made me feel so much. This was just a wonderful story of moving on after loss and finding love and happiness again. I really wanted more of them together as a couple so I'm hoping the author might have a bonus story for them in the future.

As soon as i read the blurb for this story i knew i had to read it. Being a widower myself i knew i'd connect on a higher level with these two.
Honestly heartbreaking in parts. Although you don't see the partners they lost you feel it deep. Their loss and grief is still there even after a few years. Their guilt for living is a very real thing and i felt the author did all these feelings justice.
I loved how these two meet and the transition from supportive friends to more is seamless and heartwarming. Lane is in a slightly harder position having a son and i loved how this is shown. You do feel like you have to sacrifice yourself for your kids. Its just a natural reaction but i loved how it shows you can protect your child but also have something for you.
I loved how patient Marc was and understanding even though he didn't have children himself. He quietly waited for Lane even when he thought he may get his heart broken a second time.
Lane's Dad jokes were the best. I loved this side to him. And Grant was such a great kid i loved him too.
The care and affection and passion shown between these two made me cry. In fact i shed quite a few tears. Not just heartbreak ones but hopeful? ones too. That maybe there is light at the end of the tunnel.
Just all round amazing story i'll honestly carry with me and read again and again.
Loved it. A true story of hope and love ❤
