The photos I uploaded with this review show this switch compared to our existing iDevices Switches. It's much bulkier for identical functionality. It has a basic companion app which you'll rarely use it since iOS 10's "Home" app is what I recommend vs all these various manufacturer apps.
In terms of functionality, this works with HomeKit but not Alexa. We have a few Echo Dots and it's great to be able to switch between Siri, Home app & Alexa depending on what's more convenient at a given moment. Our existing switches were purchased at the same price point & support both voice assistants but this one does not.
They just stop responding. For whatever reason, they'll freeze up (in the on or off position) and I have to unplug them and plug them back in to regain control. The app is terrible. It's a good thing you don't really have to use it. I'm assuming that some of the issues could be solved with a firmware update but that's wishful thinking at this point. In the time I have owned them, only 3 updates have come out and I don't think they solved anything.
Two stars because they are workable but I recommend others to stay away.
The first one we got was to try it with a lamp attached to a light switch in our living room. Quickly realized that turning on/off the lamp with the switch and with the app didn't work that well in practice since the switch could be in the off position, hence rendering the app inoperable. Turning the switch back on would also cause the smart plug to restart, which would delay it attaching back to the network. Decided to attach the smart plug to a lesser used lamp in the living room that now works fine. Bought 3 more smart plugs to try with other lamps and accessories. The smart plug also works well with HomeKit Automation. We attached a white noise machine to one that is in an out of the way place in my son's bedroom and automated it to turn on at bedtime and turn off in the morning at wakeup time.
We do get the occasional disconnect and delay, but overall the smart plugs have been working great. The smart plugs are bulkier than I prefer. Ideally, I would be able to attach 2 smart plugs to a standard dual outlet. I was able to connect 1 Incipio smart plug and a 2-prong plug, but a 3-prong outlet wouldn't fit with this smart plug attached. The Incipio CommandKit App is fairly straightforward and includes metering information, though not as intuitive as Apple's HomeKit App. I did have some initial issues pairing 2 of the smart plugs with my network and ended up having to enter in their device IDs manually. After that, it was smooth sailing.
If you're looking for a less expensive HomeKit compatible smart plug, the Incipio is a good value for nearly half the cost of others, though lack of Alexa compatibility could be an issue for some. 5 stars for value. 3 stars for bulk, the initial pairing process hiccups, and the occasional disconnects. So I'm giving it an overall 3.5 stars, with an Amazon round up to 4.
UPDATE: Two of the Incipio Smart Outlets have needed to be reset a couple of times. Still working ok, though going to subtract 1/2 a star because of the intermittent reliability. Price has gone up as well, so not as great a value as before. So down to a 3 stars overall.
UPDATE May 2018: ALL FOUR Incipio Smart Outlets are no longer functional. Updating my rating to 1 star. I have since switched over to Wemo which has been working really well so far.
