Former Vice President Al Gore's New York Times #1 bestselling book is a daring call to action, exposing the shocking reality of how humankind has aided in the destruction of our planet and the future we face if we do not take action to stop global warming. Now, Viking has adapted this book for the most important audience of all: today's youth, who have no choice but to confront this climate crisis head-on.

Dramatic full-color photos, illustrations, and graphs combine with Gore's effective and clear writing to explain global warming in very real terms: what it is, what causes it, and what will happen if we continue to ignore it. An Inconvenient Truth will change the way young people understand global warming and hopefully inspire them to help change the course of history.

Editorial Reviews

From Booklist

*Starred Review* In this youth-focused adaptation of Gore's 2006 adult book and Oscar-winning documentary, Gore and O'Connor (credited as "adaptor") distill the material, creating an eye-opening story that targets kids' concerns. Gone are the political passages that begin with phrases such as "During the Clinton-Gore years . . ." The language is basic--vector in the adult book becomes "life forms that can carry"--and offers clear definitions of such terms as greenhouse gases and persuasive, accessible arguments for how the climate crisis has developed and what can be done to address it. The sturdy pages are filled with color photographs and charts, and the images are riveting. Like the pictures, the personal stories bring the facts close, and in addition to the urgent science, Gore's book shows how mentors can change lives. In his moving introduction, Gore speaks about how reading Rachel Carson's Silent Spring (1962) when he was 14 years old shocked him into environmental awareness, which developed further during his studies with pioneering scientist Dr. Roger Revelle at Harvard. Gore's research continues to raise controversy, but few, if any, books for youth offer such a dynamic look at the climate issues threatening our planet. Gillian Engberg

Review

“Using easy-to-grasp graphics and revealing before-and-after photos, [Gore] shows how glaciers and ice shelves are disappearing all over the globe with alarming speed, pointing to profound climate changes and increased danger from rising sea levels in the near future. He writes measured, matter-of-fact prose, letting facts and trends speak for themselves–but, suggesting that “what happens locally has worldwide consequences,”—School Library Journal, starred review

I have seen the DVD and obviously was impressed. I got the book because I wanted to be able to get more details on the information Al Gore presents on the DVD, and the book provides that abundantly.

This one lone man courageously and determinedly crusades on and on, in the past with little encouragement, to research global warming and the warn the world, at least those who will listen. Where are the scientists that (probably because of money under the table, so the speak) denied global warming for so long? Hard to do so now. Now the corporate-motivated trick is to deny that at least part of global warming is man-made, this in the face of mounting evidence.

If you have children, or grandchildren, my advice: Don't hide your head in the sand. You owe it to them to become informed.

Get this book or the DVD. Very well written, very well made.

I purchased this book in an attempt to find out more about global warming and the associated global climate change. Having heard so much about the book and video, I felt that the work might be worth reviewing. I was saddly disappointed! Mr. Gore's book is a sham, nothing more than a 7th grade reading level, or lower, picture book with sound bite captions. There is no scientific information, only cleaverly manipulated photos and catchy personal opinions and catch-phrases. If this is what earned Mr. Gore his Nobel Prize, then that too is a sham. Any thinking person would see right through this book...there is nothing of value in the book and no real information. If this is considered a definitive work on the global warming, then the the state of science is saddley misdirected.

I had watched the video which Mr Gore made and I found that this book is the written version of it.
It is very clearly written, and illustrations impacted on me and helped a lot.
The book lacks technical data and scientific foundations, which would be a good complement. Some photographs comparing past and present time of same locations do not indicate the month in which they were taken. We must assume that they correspond to the same season but it is not clearly indicated.
I recommend it as good reading for everybody interested in the subject and specially for young people.

Good reading. Very 'eye opening', although I was always a believer in global warming. This book gives one more insight into what's going on with the earth and the interaction with mankind.
Highly recommended for everyone, especially at the high school level.

1.0 out of 5 stars A Classic of Political Alarmism
Reviewed in Canada on March 29, 2023
Gore set the tone for climate alarmism and polarization. None of the dire scenarios he paints here are factual. He is deliberately trying to scare people into action but sets the stage for thinking about climate in the wrong way. He sings the "we need to act soon song" without the slightest idea of what needs to be done.
