Natan de Manua - Nathan - is seeking redemption for something he thinks he did more than five hundred years earlier. He'd been suffering in tormented limbo until he was offered the chance to watch over Sara although he doesn't know what he's supposed to do or when. He always assumed he'd stay incorporeal but the more he's with Sara, touching her in her dreams and being part of her life, the stronger he becomes until he's able to assume a solid form again. The happiness that he and Sara find with each other feels fragile though because both know that if he's been allowed to become corporeal, chances are it's because the danger he's been sent to protect her from is near and when his job is done, he'll be gone.
While this is obviously a contemporary romance, it has a love-through-the-ages theme that reminded me of some of the romance novels that got me obsessed with the genre when I was a lot younger. There are almost two stories book-ending a tragedy - Sara and Nathan's sweet, passionate and happy romance and the event that led him to her then the aftermath. There's a paranormal suspense story throughout the majority of the book, enough to keep the lovers on edge and just enough to add some darkness to the story.Read more ›
This is a very well written story, with a full fledged story line involving all the key elements to a great drama. At one point I found myself getting choked up, and thought "well, that's it then, I guess that's all the Happily ever after she gets". But the author has another surprise in store for you, and I love the way she wrapped up the story. It left me fully satisfied & and smiling at the end. Kudos to Julia Barrett for an amazing book that I hope brings her the wonderful reviews and recognition she deserves.
There is an awesome, happy ending. Getting there is a bit rough, but who said a ghost-human romance would be easy. I had some trouble wrapping my head around the "how" of the ending, but it doesn't really matter. If you can make the leap of faith that life goes on long after death, then have faith that the ending works. As a matter of fact, the character's journey to understanding at the ending is amazing - maybe the best part of the book.
It was great to see Jewish characters - we don't usually wind up much in supernatural books (except as the occasional unfortunate werewolf), so it was very cool to identify more with the characters - especially with our mourning rituals and how we relate to God.
If mine is the only review you read, then take this leap of faith: Read. This. Book...Now!
I found this story intriguing because I have not read a paranormal romance involving a ghost as a hero before. I kept, thinking "how is this going to work?" Well, Ms. Barrett did a very good job of making this erotic romance "work." She was able to finesse the story where the reader is able to make the connection necessary to make the romance credible. The characters were believable, appealing, and unique. In addition, the plot was exciting. If you are a paranormal reader who likes her story spicy and unique, you will enjoy this story.
