Editorial Reviews

From the Author

Ghost stories don't sell? Who says? Jewish ghost stories don't sell? Really? I'm a lover of ghost stories and all things mystical. Natan de Manua is the kind of complicated hero I prefer. He has the added complication of being incorporeal. Sara Wise is my favorite kind of heroine - tough, resolute and smart. And she can see and hear ghosts.

Sara Wise has spent her life in the company of unseen ghosts. The voices usually want her to carry some last message - she's learned the hard way to promise but not deliver - and then they go away. For two months now though, she's had an incorporeal visitor that can't or won't leave. Instead of asking her to give some, "I'm in a better place," or "the second will is under the doormat," message to a surviving loved one, he's been hanging around chatting during the day and at night stealing into her dreams and making passionate love to her.

Natan de Manua - Nathan - is seeking redemption for something he thinks he did more than five hundred years earlier. He'd been suffering in tormented limbo until he was offered the chance to watch over Sara although he doesn't know what he's supposed to do or when. He always assumed he'd stay incorporeal but the more he's with Sara, touching her in her dreams and being part of her life, the stronger he becomes until he's able to assume a solid form again. The happiness that he and Sara find with each other feels fragile though because both know that if he's been allowed to become corporeal, chances are it's because the danger he's been sent to protect her from is near and when his job is done, he'll be gone.

While this is obviously a contemporary romance, it has a love-through-the-ages theme that reminded me of some of the romance novels that got me obsessed with the genre when I was a lot younger. There are almost two stories book-ending a tragedy - Sara and Nathan's sweet, passionate and happy romance and the event that led him to her then the aftermath. There's a paranormal suspense story throughout the majority of the book, enough to keep the lovers on edge and just enough to add some darkness to the story.

Although this story involved a ghost, it's a fantastic love story that I have revisited several times now. Sara & Nathan are so sweet together. Sara can see spirits, and the one in her house is visiting her in her dreams, turning them very erotic. As Nathan continues to reveal himself, their feelings grow into so much more than just lust. He has been given another chance to make a difference here on earth, a mission, and he plans on doing everything right to save the woman he has fallen in love with.
This is a very well written story, with a full fledged story line involving all the key elements to a great drama. At one point I found myself getting choked up, and thought "well, that's it then, I guess that's all the Happily ever after she gets". But the author has another surprise in store for you, and I love the way she wrapped up the story. It left me fully satisfied & and smiling at the end. Kudos to Julia Barrett for an amazing book that I hope brings her the wonderful reviews and recognition she deserves.

So right up front - I don't do romance reading. I like my vampire, my werewolves, and my ghosts. And then I get this ghost story that's so much more, and I stay up all night reading it because I cannot put my Kindle down. This is one of the best books I have ever read. Period. I love the characters. I love the plot. I love the dialogue. Did I mention I love the characters?

***Spoiler Alert***

There is an awesome, happy ending. Getting there is a bit rough, but who said a ghost-human romance would be easy. I had some trouble wrapping my head around the "how" of the ending, but it doesn't really matter. If you can make the leap of faith that life goes on long after death, then have faith that the ending works. As a matter of fact, the character's journey to understanding at the ending is amazing - maybe the best part of the book.

It was great to see Jewish characters - we don't usually wind up much in supernatural books (except as the occasional unfortunate werewolf), so it was very cool to identify more with the characters - especially with our mourning rituals and how we relate to God.

If mine is the only review you read, then take this leap of faith: Read. This. Book...Now!

Incorporeal by Julia Rachel Barrett is a touching erotic paranormal love story with an interesting twist. Sara Wise has had the ability to "see" ghosts all of her life. They afflict her life by encroaching their needs onto her before they will give her any peace. Since Natan de Manua - an incorporeal being himself - has moved into her life and excised all the other ghosts from her home. He has set himself up as her protector and breached her dreams where he appears to her in corporeal form. As he spends more and more time around her, Natan finds himself able to manipulate the elements around him and he finds himself falling inexorably in love with his ghost-seer.

I found this story intriguing because I have not read a paranormal romance involving a ghost as a hero before. I kept, thinking "how is this going to work?" Well, Ms. Barrett did a very good job of making this erotic romance "work." She was able to finesse the story where the reader is able to make the connection necessary to make the romance credible. The characters were believable, appealing, and unique. In addition, the plot was exciting. If you are a paranormal reader who likes her story spicy and unique, you will enjoy this story.

Happy Reading from Bona Fide Relfections!!
