Increase in Learning: Spiritual Patterns for Obtaining Your Own Answers Kindle Edition
“The overarching purpose of Heavenly Father's great plan of happiness is to provide His spirit children with opportunities to learn,” writes Elder David A. Bednar of the Quorum of the Twelve Apostles. But how can we best learn the things we need to know and do?
Elder Bednar emphasizes concepts, patterns, and processes that invite each of us to act and learn fundamental truths for ourselves. Declaring that answers to our questions always are found in the doctrines and principles of the restored gospel, he provides a framework in this book for learning those doctrines and understanding with our hearts.

- Reviewed in the United States on August 21, 2020I'm changing my review. At first sight it seemed the book was just copies of conference talks but I am really enjoying this book. I love it because it has helped me find answers about how to become a little better and how to avoid discouragement over my weaknesses. It is full of wisdom and beautiful words from ancient and modern prophets that have lifted my soul.
- Reviewed in the United States on November 16, 2017David A Bednar is a leader in there LDS church. With that stated, this book could be applicable to anyone wanting to increase their personal spirituality to help them deal with the stresses and confusion of life. It is written in an understandable manner with no judgmental comments. I read it often to help me understand how to deal with the personal difficulties I am currently going through.
- Reviewed in the United States on May 25, 2013When you get to the difference between Knowledge, Understanding and Intelligence, it will literally open your mind to a hundred verses in the scriptures in a new way, and give you insight and appreciation for all of your life experiences. Everything I hear now, everything I learn now, will be captured with the visual of an arch that begins with knowledge, has a keystone of understanding as I put that knowledge into practical use, finishes with intelligent choices based on what knowledge we have received and understand we have experienced. Perfect book.
- Reviewed in the United States on June 6, 2016Great book by David Bednar. I was looking for books that would really help me teach gospel doctrine (which is much harder than teaching academics). This book along with Act in Doctrine by David Bednar helped me. It is written in a very simplistic manner and it is fantastic that it comes with activities to do. Will highly recommend to anyone who teach Sunday School or Church classes!

- Reviewed in the United States on September 11, 2013I was given this book as a gift from a friend and after the first chapter began skimming and then shelved it. It initially felt like a "beginners" guide type of book. It's a long story about how I came back around to reading it again but once I gave it a chance, I really enjoyed it. It's got four chapters and I think 2 and 4 are the real winners.
In my opinion, chapter four should have been the first chapter because for me, it's really the foundation of the whole book and I loved it. So open it up, read the introduction and then START WITH CHAPTER FOUR which focuses on "doctrines, principles and applications". Bednar defines each of these and shows how they operate in the learning (or teaching) process. He says that most members focus way too much on applications and when you study that chapter you'll see why this is probably at the root of most people's problems in approaching the gospel.
I was also intrigued with the idea of "spiritually creating" each day through prayer and then physically creating your day only to return and report back to God in the evening on what happened.
Chapter two was my second favorite part of the book because Bednar takes a really great approach to "knowledge, understanding and intelligence" and explaining what they are and the differences between each.
Each chapter concluded with "related readings" which are mostly conference talks on various topics that apply to what is covered in the book. At first I was disappointed to find the book stuffed with many talks that I had already heard before, but in the context of the subjects covered in the book, they were appropriately placed.
I didn't watch any of the accompanying DVD until after the book was completed. There are parts of the book where you are supposed to watch a DVD segment but it wasn't practical for me.
Out of curiosity, I popped it in the DVD player just to see what was on it. It's basically Elder Bednar speaking to a room of young adults and answering their questions. The way in which he responds to each of them is actually pretty fascinating. I was really intrigued by the whole discussion and how powerful Bednar's approach can be to helping people find their own answers. I was actually very impressed.
Overall, I think you might hit some slow points like where 1 Nephi 11-14 are dropped right in the first chapter. Since I cheated a little and read chapter 4 first, going back and reading these chapters with that information was actually very instructive. I wonder if he is trying to teach us something. These placement of these chapters right at the beginning of a book might make you want to skip over them just like many probably skip over the Isaiah chapters in the Book of Mormon. If you understand his "doctrine, principle, application" framework then it really empowers you to unlock your learning potential aided by the Spirit.
This is a different book, it really requires you to participate, think and act. Some might not be comfortable with that and I sure wasn't but I think it was good for me and the patterns taught have made a huge difference in how I learn and teach, so all in all I think this book is a win and worth purchasing. I suppose everyone will take something different from it, but Bednar is definitely a master teacher.
...and that's my quick and dirty review, hope it helps.
