- Reviewed in the United States on January 23, 2016Format: PaperbackVerified PurchaseThis book is great. Our family counselor recommended it. We have been struggling to be on the same page as far as discipline. My daughters have been acting out more often. This explained things in a way that made sense to both of us. We both work and have crazy hours so we were often handling tantrums and discipline in different ways. This helped us to see how out of sync we were and how the girls were reacting to that. It turned out a lot of their behavior was because of the inconsistency and that fact that even when we were home we weren't really giving them our full attention. Even when we were home we weren't taking the time to fully interact with them. We were taking care of housework or using our phones while they played in the background. This isn't unusual I know but the girls felt left out even though we were in the room. The book starts off with kids acting out because they get more attention for the negative behavior. We have seen a big change in them since we have made a point of giving them our complete attention for at least 30 min a day. We let them lead the play and keep it interactive no tv. We just follow their lead. It doesn't matter if its a tea party or pretending we are characters from frozen. We also make sure to give quick positive feedback when they start doing the desired behavior and playing nice. We still have more to work on but it is amazing how much things have changed just in the last month.

Simple and to the point directions with remedies, instantaneous gratification for the child, and a breath of relief for the parents.
The author is very experienced in the treatment of aggressive or troubled children, so this works wonders for the average child.
- Reviewed in the United States on January 2, 2012Format: PaperbackVerified PurchaseThis book was very informative. It was recommended to me by my pediatrician. It helps breakdown the emotional and thought process most toddlers go through and then provides ways to encourage or discourage different behavior. A huge help! Thank you Amazon for having this book, I wasn't able to find it anywhere else!
- Reviewed in the United States on December 23, 2013Format: PaperbackVerified PurchaseI would recommend this to any parent who has questions on WHY. This books does explain on how to help with your children and attitudes and how to work through them. Very informative and I highly recommend this book.
- Reviewed in the United States on December 2, 2012Format: PaperbackVerified PurchaseI bought this book and Alan Kazdin's "The Kazdin Method" when our then-4yo son was having a very hard time adjusting to two state moves in 15 mo, 6 schools in 18 mo and a new brother who came with a 2-week hospital stay for mom. The content of this book and the Kazdin Method book is pretty much the same - understand why punishment doesn't work to change behavior (it works to cease behavior, but increases its frequency), and then craft a program to change you child's behavior using positive reinforcement. I flew through The Kazdin Method in about 2 days - it is very well written. Then I started on this book and didn't get much beyond the first chapter. I had the content already, but the writing was mediocre at best and I have a low tolerance. (Plus I had a newborn and a 4yo who was having violent tantrums lasting 30 min each 5 and more times a day.) I ended up putting this book aside and getting on with the behavior modification program that I crafted using the Kazdin book. Again, the content is essentially the same. This book has a younger starting age, and I felt that Kazdin relied to heavily on behavior charts, but I had the gist of it. (Behavior charts don't help with our son, who sees them as a reminder of his negative behavior -- he didn't want to do the negative behavior and was deeply ashamed of it, so wouldn't participate in the charts, even if they were worded to reinforce the positive opposite.) Our behavior modification program was immensely effective. Within 3 weeks he was back to the level before the hospital stay and 6th school and within another month he was back to the level before the second state move. It was very hard seeing the "old" him come back, because it made me realize how long ago he'd started to slip away. The methods reinstalled his self-confidence and self-esteem. The hardest part about putting this book into practice is getting everyone on-board. It is counter-intuitive, but once you start to see how effective it is, it changes your parenting forever. Our son is now beyond back-to-normal, he is a changed child. He is still very sensitive, his feelings still get hurt, but he rarely cries about it or tantrums. He gets sad and will tell you how he feels and will problem-solve to deal with the situation. He will walk away from kids who are mean, and write a note of apology if he hurts someone's feelings - unprompted. He comes to us to ask for attention. Occasionally he'll go loopy and use negative behavior, but if you call him on it, he will tell you why and problem-solve to resolve the issue.

- Reviewed in the United States on June 20, 2012Format: PaperbackVerified PurchaseA very simply presented guide to child rearing- you will wonder why you didn't come to this way of it yourself. But that is it's genius really. It's quite a generous book too as it takes you from terrible 2s up to teens and what's interesting is that is is a good way of treating people in general- simple, polite and respective of your child's point of view without being manipulated. Forget all the other fancy schmancy stuff- this is The One
