I have bought three similar products from Amazon recently:
1) Opteka BP-SC4000 Ultra Thin Solar Powered High Capacity (4000mAh) Backup Battery and Charger;
2) PowerGen Mobile Juice Pack 8400mAh External Battery Pack High Capacity Power Bank Charger;
3) Incredicharge I-18000 Universal External Battery Power Pack (this one);
Incredicharge I-18000 Universal External Battery Power Pack has the highest capacity of the three. It's bigger and heavier. Since you can use it to power you laptop (19V), it can only be charged by the included AC charger and adapter. So you have to carry it and these AC charger and adapter in order to recharge it wherever the AC power is available. For the same reason it can not be charged via USB at 5V, which is quite reasonable. If you don't use it as a backup battery for your laptop but only for charging for your small electric devices like iPhone, it might not be convenient to carry it around as I see it per its weight and size. I haven't tested it yet but since the iPhone 4S has a batter of the capacity of 1420 mhA, it should be able to charge iPhone 4S at least 10 times. I will have my review updated when necessary.
If you only wanted a device to charge your small electric devices like iPhone. I think PowerGen Mobile Juice Pack 8400mAh External Battery Pack High Capacity Power Bank Charger is your choice. It's compact, high-capacity, and pretty so it is very convenient to carry around anywhere you go. It charges and is charged via the USB ports so there is no extra power cord for you to carry around for charging this device. So far I haven't fully tested it and am not sure how long it will last but I'll update in the case anything unexpected happens.
Opteka BP-SC4000 Ultra Thin Solar Powered High Capacity has a solar panel so you have the option to charge it in the sun. The solar charging is very slow with the built-in solar panel of that size. In order to have Opteka BP-SC4000 been charged to 50-100% from empty with 8-hour summer sun exposure, you have to use a solar panel of larger size, such as, Instapark® 10 Watt Solar Panel Portable Solar Charger with Dual USB Ports, according to my rough test. I know nothing about solar technologies but my guess is the solar techniques are not quite there yet. I have done a quick test of the Opteka BP-SC4000 capacity, when being charged at full, it charges my iPhone 4S approximately 1.5 times.
For the Dell, it powers the laptop, but does not charge the battery (which I expected). To use it effectively, you begin using it when your laptop battery is fully charged. It will drain the external battery before using the laptop battery.
From past experiences with another system, I believe you will have problems if you try to use it in conjunction with an empty laptop battery, the system will unsuccessfully try to charge the laptop with the external battery. I have not tested this on this system.
If you boot with the external battery plugged in, you will get a warning about the unexpected power source but you can continue anyway.
The product is well packaged and looks good, is smaller and lighter than previous batteries I have had and seems to hold a good charge. I am giving it 3 stars because I cannot yet comment on usage over time and the unexpected incompatibility with our Toshibas.
