Lady Cassadra Spathe finds herself being bought as an indentured servant in the Virginia colony when she escapes England after almost killing her betrothed. She is desperate and lonely and filthy after her long sea voyage.
Jason Anders is on the ship to buy workers for his forge when he spots Cassy and buys her indenture papers. Jason is a cut above almost every other man in this novel. He is the only land owner who refuses to buy slaves and he gives his indentured servants land after they have served their indenture contract. He was once an indentured servant so he empathizes with those who are serving out their contracts.
He is attracted to Cassy who uses a different name and tells no one she is a member of the English peerage. She is a competent seamstress and is treated well at Jason's estate.
Jason has ambitions and so does Cassy but their plans change when secrets they have kept come to light. What is very obvious from the start is this couple is drawn to each other. For a British peer, Cassy has become quite egalitarian, servitude will do that. She was not snobbish though from the beginning.
Jason has lived a hard life and his goal of acceptance and respect are completely understandable. His past though, proves to be dangerous for him and Cassy.
The characters are well-drawn, and the plot is captivating, as the two lovers find themselves embroiled in exciting intrigue. A very satisfying read.
(Note -- this book is on the steamy side...)
believer out of me. Ms.Meredith has done an outstanding job of creating strong interestng
characters. Not only do I love the hero and heroine, but I also like the MANY minor ones.
Highly recommend this book and look forward to her next one!

I enjoyed this book a lot. The beginning was a bit brutal (for a romance) but the author needed a reason for the heroine Cassy to flee England.Read more
