Anyone who has spent time around the independent movement has encountered what Jones calls the "bogeyman of validity" - a sort of free-floating obsession with demonstrating the sacramental validity of the movement's priestly ministry, often drawing upon the rules of the larger sacramental churches. With admirable clarity and insight, Jones cuts through the confusion and proposes wise rules for the road which, if attended to, will ensure a much saner and more fruitful approach to the issues around validity.
Related to the above, and perhaps even more important, is the theological distinction that Jones draws between the sacrament of orders and episcopal lineage. His is a complex argument and I will not try to reproduce it in the brief space of a review. I would say that this distinction is not really an innovation. Rather, it is a perceptive articulation of the theology implicit in independent sacramental practice around the sacrament of orders.
This book is essential reading for anyone interested in the independent sacramental movement. Jones has established himself as a major theological voice in the movement and I eagerly look forward to future writings from him.
