Independents Day: Awakening the American Spirit Kindle Edition

4.3 4.3 out of 5 stars 42 ratings

From The New York Times bestselling author of War on the Middle Class, a powerful look at the critical issues facing America on the eve of the 2008 Presidential election

With up to a million viewers each day,
Lou Dobbs Tonight has become one of the most popular news programs in the nation. Now Dobbs, whose last book, War on the Middle Class, captured the plight of working Americans, asks the question: What has happened to the American dream? By examining the disastrous pubic policy choices that have eroded individual liberties, reduced workers rights and pay, and led our nation into division at home as well as into conflict around the world, Dobbs charts a determined course that will restore the fundamental equality of rights and opportunity for all Americans. I n a time of acute political turmoil, this is a book of vital importance from a revered independent.

Editorial Reviews

From Publishers Weekly

Author and journalist Dobbs (War on the Middle Class), best known for the snub-nosed populism of his nightly CNN news program Lou Dobbs Tonight, presents a thoughtful case against American political strategies past and present, encouraging citizens to "live every day as independent day." Pointing to the "near-epidemic levels" of "business scandals, Capitol Hill ethics violations, White House spin, and corporate layoffs," Dobbs concludes that "disregard for the will of the people" is the new status quo among the government and business elite. Contending that "our government rationalizes away the common good and our national interest," the author unfurls tales of partisanship, unfathomable plunges into debt, the ramifications of cheap labor, a stomach-lurching account of who owns what we generally regard as our public highways, and "the Pontius Pilate way the government washes its hands of involvement in those matters it has assigned to contractors." Issues range from immigration to trade policy to the poor state of public education and the celebrity takeover of news media. Dobbs' polemic is a four-alarm wake-up call meant to jar America's populace into reclaiming their values and voice; presenting a culmination of disturbing trends that may soon relegate "our national sovereignty to history's dustbin," Dobbs's troubling news will give any citizen much to ponder.

Lou Dobbs hit the nail right on the head. Very interesting to read. The least I know now that I am not the only one who thinks on this line. I found over the years that most people are like ostriches with their head in the sand. It looks like these people, eveso they should realize it, do not want to know the truce.
I will stick to my way of seeing things and I will not get any nasty surprises in the future.

Independents Day: Awakening the American Spirit should be mandatory reading for all Americans. I read it after the election, but still found it timely and appropriate. Lou Dobbs is one of the reasons I am proud to be an American. If you want more out of a book than entertainment, read this!

After reading the book I think we have found the new host for Meet The Press. The perfect un-biased host. As Tim Russert did, he leans a little to the left, but has a very un-biased opinion on both sides of the coin. Wouldn't it be nice.

Dobbs is billed as a conservative which by this book would show he is not. I am so disappointed when "Conservative" writers are so unaware of the writings of Karl Marx, Frederich Engels, Trotsky and other socialist writers. His ignorance of what a American constitutionalist really is makes one think that he has been listening to the pundits of his former network too much and not spending enough time in the library.

His diatribe against the Republicans AND Democrats is refreshing, though something we have heard over and over since George Wallace declared there isn't a dime's worth of difference between them, so, "Lou, what's new?" Great you just caught up with 1960's political scene.

This book is repetitive, boring and gives little new information to the initiated in Washington shenanigans. To the novice casual observer of mainly CNN/NBC cable news, it will be a shocking revelation. So, to those who know, skip it. To those who don't, prepare to see the sun rise in a different place.

This book was very enjoyable, but scary. What will happen to our country if our leaders continue in this manner? I agree with Lou Dobbs and he is not afraid to say it like it is.
