About the Author

Amy Pixton, a mother of triplets, created Indestructibles after bits of traditional board books found their way into her babies' mouths.  Amy lives in Kansas City with her husband and their three children.

Kaaren Pixton has been making art with children for many years. Kaaren’s studio is at her home in West Linn where she lives with her husband, one dog, five chickens, goldfish in a pond and countless grandchildren romping in the gardens.

Plip-Plop Pond has lovely water color-like illustrations of various pond creatures. I like the style of the artist, who appears to also be the creator of this series of Indestructible books along with her daughter-in-law. (Side note: The daughter-in-law is the mother of triplets and must understand that innate need that babies have to want to destroy pages of paper). I own five books from the series and will cut and paste a similar review for all five of them on Amazon. I started out with two books and immediately bought three more and my 5.5 month old baby has been using and enjoying these books since about 4 months old. I let my baby hold the book and explore it on his own and I don't do much beyond pointing to something on the page and saying, "That's a fish!" or something similar. My baby doesn't constantly want to hear a 20 page story, he just wants to hear my voice while he joyfully attempts to rip up the book.

Besides being a new mom, I'm also a librarian; formerly a Children's Librarian although now I work with adults. In any case, I'm aware of the importance of introducing the concept of books early on to get little ones prepared for reading one day and to teach them that books are enjoyable. For babies, that means getting them used to feeling a book (sometimes tasting, it can be hard to get them not to do that and it's how they explore), holding it and encouraging them to look at the pictures. I completely understand the criticisms that some of the users have for the fact that these books are wordless, thus preventing the chance to make word associations and the like. But these books are just plain fun and beautiful to look at and true to their claim, absolutely indestructible, which is all I can ask for in a book for my infant.

We have this and three other titles. Our son is now one year old, and has had these since he was seven months old. He loves them! He loves looking at the pictures, and though it is thankfully less and less, he still likes putting them in his mouth. He has crumpled them, drooled on them, chewed them, and probably tried to rip them to pieces, but so far there are no tears at all. They are a bit wrinkled after so much abuse, but that is not an issue for us. There are no words, so you can make up your own stories, or just name the animals - each page has enough detail other than the focus animal that it is easy to come up with stories. The pictures are beautiful too - not cheap looking at all.

The pictures are pretty fun, and I think the fact that there are no words is a feature, not a flaw. My one year old daughter hasn't managed to destroy it, but the pages do wrinkle and stay wrinkled. Imagine a piece of paper balled up tightly, and then attempt to flatten it out. That's what all the pages look like now.

Truly indestructible books! They are great for babies who are teething and always putting everything into their mouths. My wife and I have a 13 month old and when we were introduced to these they gave us reassurance that when she chewed on them she wouldn't be ingesting paper. The only down side to this particular book, Plip-plop Pond!, is there are no words, only pictures. But I suppose creative parents will be able to make up their own story! Great for kids who attempt to destruct everything! Let me say in closing that while kids (and adults!) cannot destruct these, the pages DO bend and crease, so please don't buy them thinking they are wrinkle free. They will not tear, are fully washable, and are non-toxic which means safe for baby's mouth. Go out and get your kids an indestructible and let them explore with their hands and mouths!

Some of the images are better than others. I liked the mommy and baby version best.

Book is wordless, when it should have included 1-2 words a page. Babies love print.

My son loves having a book that mom lets him play with and chew on. These books will get wrinkled but they are still functional and much better than giving my son a real book (which would be destroyed at first drool).

The pages are too thin for my 12 month old to turn yet. He can only do board book page turning at this point.

Overall, my son loves to play with it and does enjoy finding the froggie on each page.

Indestructibles are such a nice alternative to the cardboard books. The board books, my son just sucks on. But this one, he tries to turn the page & and likes to touch each page because it feels so different to him. Also, I was able to punch a hole in the bottom/spine corner and attach a binky leash to it. That way when we're in a restaurant I can attach the book to something and he can play without it going on the floor! The only thing I wish was there were some versions with words, since I do like to read books to him and am not great at making up stories.

One thing to keep in mind is that these do get beat up. But it's ok! They don't fall apart. They just don't ever look perfectly unwrinkled as they do when they arrive. But still it's ok. They are great for travel!

Ordered a bunch of these. They arrived quickly, within the week, in great condition. My baby loves them. She chews on them every day. I put one through the washer and dryer and it still looks great. She even "reads" them during diaper changes. Love this item!
