“For her to love me, she had to be willing to kill me. Anything else would show that her heart was untrue.”
The struggle against not-so-charming storybook narratives isn’t the only complicating factor in Henrietta “Henry” Marchen’s life. As part of the ATI Management Bureau team protecting the world from fairy tales gone awry, she’s juggling her unwanted new status as a Snow White, dealing with a potentially dangerous Pied Piper, and wrangling a most troublesome wicked stepsister—along with a budding relationship with Jeff, her teammate.
But when a twisted, vicious Cinderella breaks out of prison and wreaks havoc, things go from disenchanted to deadly. And once Henry realizes someone is trying to use her to destroy the world, her story becomes far from over—and this one might not have a happily ever after.
Indexing: Reflections is New York Times bestselling author Seanan McGuire’s continuing new urban fantasy, where everything you thought you knew about fairy tales gets turned on its head.
This book was initially released in episodes as a Kindle Serial. All episodes are now available for immediate download as a complete book.

About the Author
Seanan McGuire was born and raised in Northern California, where she has lived for the majority of her life. She spends most of her time writing or watching television but also draws a semiautobiographical comic strip and has released several albums of filk music (science fiction and fantasy-themed folk music). To relax, Seanan enjoys travel and frequents haunted corn mazes, aquariums with good octopus habitats, and Disney parks. Seanan is remarkably good at finding reptiles and amphibians wherever she goes, sometimes to the dismay of the people she happens to be traveling with.

About the author

Seanan McGuire is a native Californian, which has resulted in her being exceedingly laid-back about venomous wildlife, and terrified of weather. When not writing urban fantasy (as herself) and science fiction thrillers (as Mira Grant), she likes to watch way too many horror movies, wander around in swamps, record albums of original music, and harass her cats.
Seanan is the author of the October Daye, InCryptid, and Indexing series of urban fantasies; the Newsflesh trilogy; the Parasitology duology; and the "Velveteen vs." superhero shorts. Her cats, Lilly, Alice, and Thomas, are plotting world domination even as we speak, but are easily distracted by feathers on sticks, so mankind is probably safe. For now.
Seanan's favorite things include the X-Men, folklore, and the Black Death. No, seriously. She writes all biographies in the third person, because it's easier that way.

This second POV character is the best part of the book. She has depth, and her story is powerful. Also action-packed and fun. Henry's part, by contrast, falls a bit flat. It is very meta and abstract -- story-teller Seanan McGuire telling stories about stories that tell stories. One is reminded again that McGuire has a degree in Folklore from Berkeley, and at times this seems more like a scholarly work. (To be clear, as a former professor, I have nothing against scholarly works. But as scholarship Reflections has the tone, but not the substance, which of course is not what McGuire was aiming for.)
Still, second POV character carries the story. Also, Reflections has the thing I most like in McGuire's October Daye series -- unexpected revelations of deep background. For the most part I enjoyed this tremendously as I read it.
I have a hard time rating this book. It felt like five stars as I read it -- deep and involving. But my criterion for five stars is literary greatness. What do I mean by that? I can't tell you -- it's one of those "You know it when you see it." things. Except I don't. It's a difficult judgment every time. My criterion for four stars is perfection: A four-star book is perfect -- everything is done right, there is nothing wrong, and much good. Now the problem is that the five and four-star criteria are orthogonal -- a great work of literature may be flawed (most are, in fact), and a perfect book may not reach greatness. So, the rule is, greatness trumps flaws. A flawed but great book gets five stars.
So, I thought about Reflections, and I decided it doesn't achieve greatness. Also, it is flawed. So, apparently that would ding it down to three stars. But it is clearly better than three stars. So I'm giving it four stars, even while castigating myself for a failure of complete honesty.
Shows you the darker side of many of these fables that have always had a hint of the sadistic to them to begin with.
I had no clue, until reading McGuire’s work, that the Aarne-Thompson Index even existed. I’ll definitely be doing further research on this Index! Found it fascinating and could see so much more potential in it.
It wouldn’t be hard to imagine McGuire picking a different fable and writing additional books for the team to explore, or even stand-alones based upon the versions the Index has researched and put down.
Truly wish more of Seanan McGuire’s books were available in the Kindle Unlimited library.
Thank you for writing.

This sequel carries on directly from where the previous book left off, with the team undergoing a review of that case. Again we have a few seemingly disjoint chapters, and again they are shown to be more relevant than we first realised. We find out more about Henry’s brother who escaped being a Rose Red, and much more about Sloane and how she got to be a Wicked Sister. We see some of the tragic downsides of incarcerating activated fairy tale characters to protect the rest of the world, and we learn more about the original form of various fairy tales.
Although we know from this style of book that everything will work out in the end, it’s not at all clear how that will happen, and who will suffer and be lost along the way. I’m looking forward to more tales in this world.
Would like to finding out what happened to the characters next.
