About the Author

Seanan McGuire was born and raised in Northern California, where she has lived for the majority of her life. She spends most of her time writing or watching television but also draws a semiautobiographical comic strip and has released several albums of filk music (science fiction and fantasy-themed folk music). To relax, Seanan enjoys travel and frequents haunted corn mazes, aquariums with good octopus habitats, and Disney parks. Seanan is remarkably good at finding reptiles and amphibians wherever she goes, sometimes to the dismay of the people she happens to be traveling with.

Imagination, maturity, and extraordinary passion

Sequels – especially sequels that were never intended – seldom turn out as well as their predecessor novels. There’s almost always something lacking, some animating force missing from them that was fully apparent in the earlier book.

That’s not the case here.

In “Indexing,” Seanan McGuire crafted a passionate paean to the power of story. “Indexing: Reflections” harnesses that immense power to the power of love: love of self, love of a friend, and love of duty. It works because that passion is so evidently alive in her, and to a degree that’s hard to find in these days of “the same only different” and interminable attempts to use a Formula in place of imagination.

Her maturity as a writer shines through every page of this book. Quite a lot of people believe that maturity is somehow an antithesis to imagination. It’s actually the reverse. The mature writer is confident enough in his gifts to let his imagination have its head, run as fast and as freely as he knows it can, certain that it will not escape his control

I loved “Indexing” so much that I was afraid to start “Reflections.” Afraid of the let down, the sense of loss that would come at witnessing the waste of the most original, vivid conception in contemporary fantasy, a field brought miserably low these last fifty years by the pursuit of fads and revenue. I testify to you all: that’s absolutely not the case.

Highly, highly recommended!

Fantastic Realms that make you wish

McGuire is a prolific writer, and one I came across largely by accident. Often when some writes a lot the quality varies, but I have not found that to be the case with her. This is set in world where 'Fairy Tales' come alive and place people in them - think of the stories themselves being live and wanting to live. These continue to follow a team of 'federal investigators' whose job it is to seek out and identify incursions into our worlds, and to stop them. Which they do with varying success. The team is composed of people, some of whom have been directly affected by the stories that have come alive in the past. If you ever wondered what life would be like if it were not what you are living, you will likely enjoy this. I have bought several books by McGuire and have never been dissappointed!

A great sequel to Indexing!

Now I know the joy of having a pre-ordered book delivered at midnight on release day...or at least the first chapter of the book. I am so glad Henry, Jeff, Sloane, Andy, and Demi are back!!

So, the story ends, or at least, this part of it is finished. In the acknowledgments, McGuire admitted she had not planned a second Indexing book, but the characters and readers did not agree. I can live with this ending, but if McGuire and her characters see fit to do a third book, I will be eager to pre-order it in any form.

I recommend reading Indexing before Reflections because it would be silly not to. McGuire's world is the world of fairy tales, and the fairy tales want to manifest in our regular, mundane world. The Bureau protects the mundane world by preventing the manifestations, fixing the damage, or picking up the pieces when the Bureau arrives too late. Henry is a Snow White working for the Bureau whose story has become active by her choice to save her team. When she takes a huge risk and embraces her story even more, her fairy tale takes a very, very bad turn. I love the new characters: Ciara, Piotr, and Carlos. The original characters are back as well; Henry, Jeff, Andy, Sloane, and Demi have learned they are stronger together than alone, and they will need all their strength to stop the bad guys from warping the fairy tales to change the world.

Saving the world from fairy tales

In this fairytale modern world, wherein will flowers grow up from her carpet and bluebirds fly into her windows, our heroine must fight against becoming part of her Snow White story. She's part of a dedicated and top-secret team to save people from being destroyed by fairy tales.
Every bit as riveting as the original Indexing.

Seanan's work is always complicated and metaphorical, but I am especially entranced with the re-imagining of the dark fairy tales and what it might be like should they have a life of their own. In psychology, we talk about the importance of narrative; we are the stories we tell ourselves, about our histories, our victories and our losses. In Seanan's work, she takes this literally; the narrative has power to re-shape reality, not just our imagining of it. The archetypal stories of heroes and villains re-write a person into the shape that fits the story, whether you identify with it or not. And like all fairy tales, what should not be possible is not just possible, but inevitable. She explores the dark side of being a hero or a princess, and the tragedy of being forced into one of the subsidiary roles, since there can't be a Snow White without a Rose Red, or a Cinderella without an ugly stepsister. A few people are able to fight against the narrative, to re-write their lives to allow them a way to disrupt the structure set out in the fairy tales. They are the ones who can help prevent others from becoming victims of the narrative, and they are a part of the Bureau. In this, the second edition of the Indexing series, the narrative has found someone who can re-write her story, but instead of becoming more herself, she learns to become another character, to create powers for herself that the stories don't give her. The perfect archetypal villain, she is Story personified, the anti-Bureau. I can't tell you more without giving plot away, but the story is exciting, and well written, and deeper than the average paranormal.
