I am an older woman, and traveling as a tourist to India next year with my spouse. I like to gather as much information about the host country as I can. India is more of a challenging environment, given its cultural practices regarding women than many other countries I have visited. So it is important to understand what I am stepping into.
Ms. Sharma's books help tourist women understand the challenges they may face in India. Sadly, some Indian men do not treat women very well at all and that extends to tourists. I am somewhat put off by what I've read, yet am grateful the author has undertaken to warn me and to suggest how to circumvent potential problems. I am still going, but I am traveling with a more educated eye as to the culture and practices as it applies to women.
I understand being cautious and some of the tips were helpful in any place one would travel, but if the overall point of this book was to keep women away from India, it did the trick!
On the flip side, better safe than sorry! This is why I said the book was somewhat helpful.
While the newspaper headlines can scare you, with a bit of precautions and common sense you can have an enjoyable experience and that is what the book tries to achieve. Some of the reports may appear too graphic to western readers, but they have been taken from news reports and not made up.
I think if you are first time visitor to India of either sex, it would be a good idea to read this book written in a very practical matter of fact style by somebody who understand India very well and has personally traveled in India.
Because I was prepared for the worst, I had a much more enjoyable holiday and nothing was an awful surprise... Water off a ducks back!
This book is a must for any woman traveling to India, it teaches everything about staying safe in a variety of different environments and situations and it will definitely improve any visitor's experience.
