A brief example is the Budapest Gambit, a line not seen much in tournament play: 1 d4 Nf6 2 c4 e5!?. Sawyer covers a few games with minimal analysis and ignores the most testing line: 3 dxe5 Ng4 4 e3! Nxe5 5 f4. No mention at all. Most likely he never faced it in his online chess games against patzers of unknown strength or the plethora a Class B players he faced in clubs.
You will learn virtually nothing from this book. You would do better simply to consult an online database and use that with an chess engine to develop your own lines. Or, if you do want a repertoire book, decide on a single defense and buy a book from a titled author. For example, the King's Indian Defense by GM Joe Gallagher or the Grunfeld Defense by IM Yelena Dembo.
