This book is great. Where I'm from originally there is a huge Indian community and many Balti restaurants that sell Indian cuisine. The recipes in this book taste authentic to that experience, they give both the British and American words for ingredients and weights, and the Naan bread recipe is easily adaptable for a bread maker if you have one. It's beautifully illustrated with full color photos for each step and the instructions are very clear. If you pop into an Indian grocery store you can purchase the many spices used in the recipes for a fraction of the cost of buying them in a regular supermarket.

I am buying a replacement copy of this. I was married to a Pakistani man and lived in Pakistan for a year. The only thing nice my mother in law ever said to or about me was that I was a better cook than most Pakistani women. And this book is the reason. I cooked almost every dish from the book and they all said I cook food like you find in a fancy restaurant. They loved it. Granted Pakistan is not India, maybe these dishes are more of a Pakistani flavor than Indian.

My copy is well stained and much used

My copy has been one of my favorite cookbooks for about 6 years and it now has numerous pages that are well stained and spattered. Not only is the background material extremely useful, the recipes are excellent, and the book as object is well designed for a cook to use: large pages w/easy to read type; images for inspiration, and a binding that tends to lay open well. If you want to try to make your own Indian cuisine, this is a good place to start, to continue, and finish! I especially recommend the Tarka Dhal on p194, and the Chicken Curry on p57.
