Angela Walton-Raji was born in western Arkansas, and spent her childhood hearing many stories of family from Oklahoma. In 1991 she discovered her family's history in the Choctaw Nation, learning about their enslavement by Choctaw Indians. This "Freedmen of the Frontier" grew out of a project where she profiled 52 Freedmen families from five Native American tribes. This book reflects the families profiled in that project. She was the first genealogist to specialize in Freedmen records of the Five Civilized Tribes, in what is now Oklahoma. She now resides in Maryland where she continues to write and research.
