About the Author

Larry Frank studied medieval art in Paris. Upon returning to the United States, he found that the counterpart that continued the tradition for him was the linear and stylized design of the santos. He was a collector of santos for thirty-five years and was considered a leading authority on the subject.

This book depicts the best from collections of early Native American Pueblo silverwork. The photographs allow the reader to identify key characteristic features of traditional Native American jewelry. The informative verbal descriptions do not insult the reader nor the makers. There are few books that portray the early Southwest jewelry as well as this one.

Excellent reference on Southwest Indian Jewelry. A good read before going in search of old or modern day Native American jewelry teasures.

I read the entire description of the book plus all of the existing reviews prior to purchasing it. Unfortunately, there was absolutely no mention that out of 200 pages of images, only 47 pages are in color! I love turquoise and found it impossible to enjoy a book of BLACK AND WHITE photos of this jewelry. It was painful having to read in the description that the stones were green turquoise or blue turquoise but not being able to see the colors or enjoy what makes this Native American jewelry so beautiful. Even the plain silver pieces looked bland in black and white. On a positive note, the 47 color pages were great! But I could not justify keeping the book that so frustrated and disappointed me, even though I loved those 47 pages. I returned it.

It looks like someone went to a museum, or museums and took a lot of pictures of collections of early indian silver jewlery. The first 14% of the pages of the book contain subject matter about early manufacturing of silver jewelry. It was very general, not specific at all. Somewhat like it alluded to rather than focusing on the subject. I formed this impression from reading other books on the same subject written by other authors.

To its credit, the photo work is quite nice. If you want a decent collection of pictures of early Navajo and other related Indian silver jewelry (none specifically identified by craftsman name) showing the construction details of such. .. This is the book for you. I also will keep the book as a photo reference of early silver and turquoise jewelry styles.

Regards, Pag

An interesting book with lots of information. Will stay in my reference library. I have several similar pieces including a bit somewhat like the one on the cover (the shanks are different in design).
