Indian Summer: a short story Kindle Edition
When a woman is at the end of her rope, anything can happen
Claire Jasper has seen enough. Her husband, a handsome cowboy and bronc rider, is away, shacked up with a buckle bunny. Claire enjoys the quiet... until the sheriff comes calling. Where exactly is Owen Jasper? Claire won't tell.
This short story was included in an anthology, Deadly by the Dozen, edited by Mark Terry. Reviewers singled it out for praise: "This book was the perfect read for a week of appointments, sitting in waiting rooms and whipping out my Kindle for ten minutes at a time! All the stories in here were capably written, and all captured my attention in way or another. However...the absolute stand out for me was `Indian Summer' by Lise McClendon. It was just fabulous - a great mix of good writing, good characters and a strong element of mystery. That story would stand out anywhere."

About the author

Here are some things I love: sassy heroines, twisty mysteries, juicy secrets.
My books, written under my own name and as Rory Tate and Grier Lake, are full of all those things. I am fascinated by the lives of women. The choices that women sometimes make are a quagmire of directions and misdirections, sending women into careers, love affairs, children (or no children), travels, and hobbies. And, in the case of my novels, into suspense, crime, secrets, and love.
I started out writing mysteries set in Montana and Wyoming (Alix Thorssen mysteries), World War 2-era mysteries (Dorie Lennox), the branched out into standalones (Jump Cut, PLAN X, All Your Pretty Dreams), and the Bennett Sisters Mysteries, now thirteen strong and counting. Besides my own novels I am a co-author with four other crime novelists of the foodie thriller, Beat Slay Love. This dark, comic send-up of Eat Pray Love is "delicious over-the-top fun." Check it out here on Amazon.
In 2020 I conceived of and edited an anthology, STOP THE WORLD: Snapshots from a Pandemic, to document this wild year in our lives. Forty authors from ten countries have contributed essays, fiction, and poetry. All profits go to charity. Please check it out!

Lise McClendon writes fiction from her home in Montana. She is the author of numerous novels, short stories, and articles. In 1997 she wrote and directed the short film, The Hoodoo Artist, featured at the Telluride Indiefest. She has served on the national boards of directors for Mystery Writers of America and International Association of Crime Writers/North America. She is on the faculty of the Jackson Hole Writers Conference and co-presents a novel workshop for writers.
"After thirty years writing fiction has become as necessary as breathing. Finding the essential story in the novel, chipping away the rock until the solid core is revealed, is an adventure and a joy."

Good descriptive writing of the ranch and country side in a remote section of Montana. Very good character development for a short story. Well done.
