Sharp Intelligence, Humane Instincts, Rational Thought

The book - by a senior Indian civil servant - is a reflection of the personality of the author. A collection of writings over 20-odd years or so, Guhan's deep commitment to poverty alleviation and the establishment of social justice in a country of contrasts like India shines through this book. But no maudlin sentiments here. Guhan is known amongst the Tamil Brahmin community as a person of acerbic manner and he did not tolerate fools easily. Easily one of the brightest civil servants to grace India's halls of governance, his razor-sharp mind informs the debate in this book. Its hard to summarise this book since Guhan has written on classical dance to the Ayodhya dispute to social security for the poor - I suggest that the serious student of India and of development economics read this. In particular I would recommend the essay on Centre-State relations and how a poorly defined federal structure has held back development in India. Guhan died relatively young. Its a great loss.
