A movie about people who happen to make games

As a documentary lover - I'm of the belief that the best documentaries are about the people behind a passion and not the passion itself. If you want to learn about how an indie video game is made, then this is not the film for you. However, if you want to learn about artists who happen to pick video games as their medium - you will LOVE this film. The documentary team in this film manage to capture the brilliant and tragic life that is an independent artist. And the artists themselves are eloquent and sincere enough to really pull you into their madness. And like all great documentaries, you are always left feeling conflicted about your own opinions and reactions to the subjects. In my case, I had respect for the passion and dedication of these video game programers. However, I was also appalled by their lack of real-world ambition and the total absence of personal accountability. It's a good case study on what we can define as "art" and who can truly call themselves "artists."

Movie Blows Me Out of the Water; Gets to the Meat of the Fish

Really great movie. If you want to see the emotional side of game development, this movie is a great motivator.

Three profiles are documented: Jonathan Blow with Braid, Phil Fish with Fez, and the guys from Super Meat Boy. Of the three, I think Jonathan's was the best. It was also the most drama free. In it he is introspective and ponders the development cycle.

The other two profiles are more dramatic. The guys doing Super Meat Boy you really just want to root for, and in the end they do very well. Phil Fish, well, it's hard to know what to say about him. In the movie, he seems like a passionate developer, but also kind of a little over the top. He is also the reason I give it 4 rather than 5 starts. My heavens, can this guy not say anything without cursing? It makes his travails seem more melodramatic than genuine.

Overall, I really enjoyed the movie, and would recommend it to aspiring developers.

Great for motivation

If you ever think of making a video game, then watch this movie, read the postmortem for "Cook, Serve, Delicious", and attend a game jam. If you do those three things, you should figure out really easily if you still want to make games, and if so, how to do it.
I've watched this movie at least 30 times. Whenever I lose motivation over the years, I just pop this back in and get back to work.

Nice Inside Look

I have an interest in one day making indie games, so clearly I was pretty excited to see this documentary, a behind the scenes look at the stresses that go into producing independent video games. I was initially hoping for an in-depth look at the process, from software to release, but this film is really just about the people. I felt a bit slighted in the beginning, but the film turned out to be more than enough for me. I really enjoyed it. This film really put into perspective many of the misconceptions of the indie market, specifically, that it really isn't that easy to produce a great game.

Intriguing but too much vulgarity

It is an interesting look into the world of indie development but I felt some of the material was too vulgar and pointless that it detracted. Did we really need to know about the flash game C****r or listen to to Fish constantly spout the f word.

Amazing, but not perfect

This movie is amazing, and shows the stress that the developers go through when making their game, but there are a few problems that are prevelent in this movie. My biggest problem is that the creator of Braid isn't really shown in this movie, he has some scenes, but none that are as compelling as the other two indie game developers, and that is a real shame, because Braid is an amazing game. Another problem is that this movie can be a bit...biased...at times, case in point, they hate all the new games, and they think that game developers only do it for the money nowadays, but while that is true, there are some great classics out there, games like Infamous 1 and 2, Rayman Origins, most of nintendo games, LittleBigPlanet, Half Life, Portal, I mean these are great games that I consider classics for their time, but these people think that the only games out there nowadays are crappy shooters like COD, which is kind of true, but they are looking at the wrong place, and it makes this movie a bit more one sided. Otherwise, this movie is JUST FANTASTIC, I LOOOOOVVVEEE this movie. Not only do they teach you about game design, and their road to making the games, but it also talks deeply about their lives as real people, and what they do after they make the game. It makes the developers have a lot of "character" and it makes them relatable people, instead of just stereotypical "nerds" that live with there moms (god I hate that assumption about gamers). Seeing them finish the game is oddly satisfying, this movie is great, and for any gamer who is serious about gaming must see this film
