Grosso, who contributes to Huffington Post and other media outlets, also hosts a website for those who share—or are interested in exploring—his spiritual aesthetic. This volume draws both its title and much of its content from that site (theindiespiritualist.com). As a member of the indie culture that has matured around skateboarding, à la Tony Hawk, and the self-taught musicianship of the indie rock variety, Grosso also has been influenced by his experiences with drug-abuse and substance-abuse rehabilitation programs, and he developed his approach to spiritual matters with the same independent, sampling-weighted approach he brings to his other cultural pursuits. The book is broken into brief and often breezy chapters, many with links to Grosso’s own music. This isn’t a text for a reader who has developed spiritual or theological questions but, rather, for readers who want to look over the shoulder of a fellow who explores the nature of his soul by mixing up individuality and spirituality. --Francisca Goldsmith

On a side note, I also feel like I gained some new language and understanding from this book - from "buzz" words I often hear in the spirituality world that I never really understood until now, to many new descriptive words that I "got" immediately (like Chris's use of "s***-tastic). Chris's writing style is blunt and innovative which keeps you craving his next words.
Having been on a spiritual path since before my teenage years, I can honestly say this book is different. It helps you to feel part of something way bigger than just your own little world. This book is especially for those of us who don't resonate with a path of just love, light, and rainbows.
I read this in two days and I even finished the book to immediately follow it up with one of the meditation practices he recommends. And, of course, it felt amazing.
If you think even for a second that this sounds like you, do yourself a favor and buy it. You won't regret it. Namaste!
I love this:
“My personal search has led me to resonate most deeply with the non-dualistic approach, which asserts that we’re actually safe at home in the Godhead at this very moment, while experiencing an illusionary nature of this day-to-day material world as it is projected from our mind (which is something quantum physics, our most contemporary and accurate form of science, supports.”)
Notice the singular form “mind.” The whole book is poetic.
Chris's style is open-hearted and down-to-earth. He is very honest and open with the reader, even about his own hardships, failures, and things he is self-conscious about. That kind of bravery is pretty inspiring.
The book has lots of scannable QR codes and links. After reading this, I checked out some of his articles and talks online. One talk that he did with en*thos was especially cool...he is just such a totally calm and relaxed person and he has this incredible kindness radiating out of him. It was really impressive.
I look forward to Chris's future books.
