Many students arrive on college campuses already critical of Israel and misinformed about the causes of conflict in the Middle East. There is a pressing need to look at what students are taught in high school and in earlier grades.

CAMERA's monograph, Indoctrinating Our Youth, is a case study about the controversy in Newton, Massachusetts regarding the materials used in a 10th grade World History course on the Israeli-Palestinian conflict. The study traces the roots of the controversy, recounts contentious interaction with the public, and examines problematic materials used in the course. The study also examines materials used to teach about Islam in a 9th grade World History course.

Much of the material used to teach about the Israeli-Palestinian conflict was pulled from the Internet and reflected questionable journalistic reporting rather than historical scholarship. Students were given an account that was riddled with errors and omitted crucial historical information and context. Items used to teach about Islam tended to be simplistic and evasive when discussing controversial topics relating to women and minorities in Muslim society.

The use of the World History course to acquaint students with a contemporary issue raises questions about what safeguards are needed for teaching current events in a history class. While teachers should be able to select materials for their classes, the increasing reliance on materials from the Internet, many of which are inadequately vetted, opens the classroom to fringe perspectives and groups promoting political agendas.

The monograph offers recommendations on what parents, teachers, and other concerned citizens can do to address the problem of substandard and biased materials in schools.

Anti-Israel propaganda reaches into the public schools. Newton, MA -- a Case Study

A scholarly, frightening account of how anti-Israel curriculum mills and Saudi efforts have placed biased, anti-Jewish, anti-Israel and Islamophilic curricular materials in American schoolrooms. The report focusses on the public schools in leafy suburban, heavily Jewish Newton, MA and traces the efforts of individual Jewish citizens to remove anti-semitic, defamatory classroom exercises. It started when a girl came home and asked her dad if it is true that Jews in Israel murder Palestinian women in jails there. The dad exposed the fact that she was taught this lie from the Saudi-funded, "Arab World Studies Notebook" -- already condemned by the American Jewish Committee and others. It turned out that Harvard University gave workshops to Newton teachers containing outrageously biased materials that the teachers simply took as gospel, coming as it did from Harvard. The Harvard Middle East Studies Center was for a time run by an anti-Israel activist who was subsequently let go. But he provided Newton teachers with these materials. Example: students in Newton were given a falsified Hamas Charter which actually removed the original curses it contains against the Jews, this so that the teachers could follow the lesson plan that had them tell students that this is NOT a religious conflict but only one about borders. Other examples abound, including propaganda maps created by the PLO -- where the originals had PLO logos, but when given to students, the PLO logo was removed. Shameless!

The backstory is about the failure of the Jewish establishment to help the protesting Jewish parents. Indeed, the Jewish Community Relations Council defended the curricular materials and the school officials who thwarted the Jewish parents efforts. They will now be pressed to publicly rescind their assurances. Stay tuned!

Jews in America worry about what's happening on the campuses where radical professors line up with radical students against Israel and her Jewish supporters. The problem with high school bias may be even more profound. This is excellent and important work by CAMERA

The monograph written by Steven Stotsky should be required reading for school administrators who decide what curriculum is used to impart information to our children. Teaching the history of the Palestinian-Israeli conflict is a complex endeavor. Our youth in most cases are only familiar with the conflict through family discussions or news bites. Steven Stotsky emphasizes that there is no other alternative to factual information. Anything else opens the door to scrutinizing the school program and ultimately the students will have fallen short of what is the true history of this conflict.
The monograph is so well presented. Steven Stotsky clearly was tireless in his effort of qualifying his statements by backing them up with myriad reference materials. He made me think more deeply about what my children are learning in the school I put so much trust into.

I am familiar with Newton schools. And I agree with the allegations of anti-Israel propaganda in its curriculum. These biased educators are doing a terrible disservice to students and the community. I am glad this book exposes it.
