A fascinating look at one of history's most misunderstood women. Gracefully written by Madame Bertiere and superbly translated by Dr. Mary Hudson, this book was hard to put down even knowing how it would all end. Barbara Roberts, MD

This is a delightfully well-written translation of a French biography of the French queen Marie Antoinette by Simone Bertiere. It is no longer available at a fair price or in reasonable quantities due to the desire of Amazon to make a larger profit on sales. The book, translated into English by the estimable Mary Hudson, is virtually unavailable in the U.S. because Amazon is trying to force book distributor Hachette Group into a sales agreement that is unfair and unreasonable. You, the consumer, therefore are overcharged or denied access to the book at any reasonable price or in e-Book format at all.

The best biography of Marie Antoinette Queen of France
Reviewed in the United Kingdom on January 12, 2019Verified Purchase
I consider Simon Bertiere's biography as one of the best along with Castelot's and Fraser's. While Castelot is too strict to the Queen's conduct in politics and court affairs and Fraser is perhaps too sympathetic to the Queen, Bertiere is more balanced in that proves how really influential Marie Antoinette was in strictly political issues before the Revolution and how stubborn and domineering she could be and was when dealing with her favourite minions and the life at Versailles and her pursuit of her desires as Queen of Versailles and mistress of the Trianon. The question of her marital life, Bertiere gives a more plausible explanation. While during her first years as Dauphine and Queen she had to cope with Louis XVI's clumsiness and lack of trust towards her, she eventually avoided the marital bed as part of her ribelliousness and distraction in her pursuit of her luxurious life. As far as her role in the Revolution, Bertiere maintains that her involvement was caused by the timid nature of the King, her goal to protect her son's inheritance, avoid the fall of the monarchy and save the Royal Family. This is in contrast with Castelot's effort at showing a meddling, arrogant foreign Queen. The problem of studying any historical character is applying one's political and moral categories to an individual who lived in a different time and context. This is not an apology but a question of coherence Bertiere fully applies to this misunderstood Queen. I wish this excellent biography could go mainstream as it is perhaps the only one that gives a really nuanced and balanced view of Marie Antoinette Queen of France.
