Power transmission belts transmit mechanical power across greater distances than systems that use gears, and are available in a variety of types for use with pulleys in household, automotive, manufacturing, mining, agricultural, and industrial applications. V-belts are used in automotive applications to drive auxiliary components such as alternators and in industrial applications to drive compressors and pumps. Conveyor belts are used in assembly lines such as bottling plants and packaged food production and for moving packages in shipping facilities. Timing belts are used in engines to maintain the relative position of moving parts. Flat belts are used in home appliances such as vacuum cleaners, or as an industrial belt such as in a conveyor system. A pulley is generally made of steel or cast iron but may also be made of aluminum, polycarbonate resin, thermoplastic, or nylon where load requirements permit them and their lighter weight provides an advantage. When choosing components in a power transmission system, consider the environment in which it is used and the load requirements of the driven pulley.
