A water purification system is often used to remove chemicals, contaminants, solids, and gases from tap water. The two main types of water purification system for homes are reverse osmosis and the filtration method. Reverse osmosis water purification systems force water through a semi-permeable membrane that will transmit water molecule by molecule, but block other materials. Filtration employs one or more filters to remove odor, taste, and color. Water purification tablets are often used to disinfect freshwater, although sediment is not removed.
The most common water purification devices are faucet mounts, simple filter units that screw onto the faucet, either directly or with an adapter. Some counter top water purification products come with a diverter valve and an additional faucet for receiving clean water. Under-sink filter systems are either direct connect or include a separate faucet. Some under sink units are reverse osmosis water purification systems, with up to 10 stages of purification.
Whole house filters are available that attach to the main water supply. Other water purification devices include filters for showerheads, and those that do not attach to the water supply, such as counter top water distillers and filtration tumblers. Additional products include storage tanks, refrigerator connection kits and inline filters, replacement water filters and cartridges, and water purification tablets.
