Editorial Reviews

Review

"One would think that there's such a great disparity between the two story lines, but the author does a good job of weaving both elements into each other.... It's a great journey of self-knowledge, not just for Jane, but also of Richard." - Tin, Loves Saves the World

This was very enjoyable. Lady Jane Haven was a widow. Her husband had beaten her when she miscarried the third time and continued to do so until his death. However she had fallen in love with a widower with two Boys. She went to him first time the night after her husband died. She visited him regularly sneaking out early morning. He asked her to marry him but she was hesitating.

Richard was patient and knew what all she had been through. Richard was a Duke but worked for the War Department as a spy. He told Jane that she would make a good spy. She laughed until she overheard two women speaking in French about bodies from the cemetery and it bringing a lot of money. Without thinking she left the tea party to follow them. One of the women met a man and exchanged a package.

She went directly to Richard to tell him. However the woman was aware that Jane followed her. She received a note in feminine hand saying "I know it was you."

What will happen now? Why has she chosen not to marry the man she loves? Can she handle two boys borne by someone else when she could have none of her own? Will she survive? What is Lady Stranahan up to? Will she be able to prove it? Sill Richard be able to handle Jane being a spy as well? This is not your usual spy story. It was delightful with a few scary moments. I think you will like it too. There are also some funny moments. There are surprising moments and poignant ones as well. There are no boring ones. This is a book that invites sequels.

I liked Richard and Jane. They were such a great couple. He was so patient with her, because of the beatings she took from her now dead husband, and he loved her so much. You could just feel it. I liked his sons, too, Nathan and Alec. I laughed over the conversation they had with Jane about the chestnuts and what they looked like. That was too funny.

For all the beatings she took Jane was a strong and brave woman, making me so glad she wasn’t a whiner or constant crier. For all Richard’s spying Jane didn’t do so bad herself, considering she didn’t have a clue what she was doing. And speaking of spies? Lady Folton was really something. I couldn’t believe it!

I enjoyed every word of the novella. There was NO swearing in it but there was some pretty descriptive sex.

I had not read anything by this author before and enjoyed her writing very much. The only problem was this book was too short. I would have liked to read more. The story was good tho and the characters were likable. It was worth the read.

One thing about Kindle I love is highlighting special passages or moments. This was a precious story of restoring the self esteem of a damaged woman. Her father didn't know what kind of man he was giving his daughter too or he would never have done it. It moved quickly and it was amazing she survived all she went through. Thankfully she had someone to turn to who loved her for who she was and encouraged her knowing she had intelligence. This is the first book I have read by Jessie Clever and I liked it.

I enjoyed this well written book. There were just a few editing errors that were annoying, but not too distracting from the story. The plot was fairly simple, but points for originality. The H/h are very appealing and likeable characters and the Duke's sons are very charming. I loved the strength shown by the heroine whose earlier abusive marriage could have broken a lesser woman. I also appreciated the hero being man enough to see and cherish her strengths, even while wanting to protect and coddle her. There are sexual scenes and violence in this book. This was a pleasant quick read. I will look for the others in the series.

Heat factor hot.

But I loved this one. It was my first time to read Ms Clever but it surely won't be my last. I agree with another reader that the scene where Jane saves the boys was a doozy. My only small caveat was that I couldn't tell when the story took place. I deduced that it was before 1800 because of the clothes but the reference to "the Queens house" threw me. Whatever, it was a great story and I will certainly buy everything she writes from now on.

This is the 3rd book in the series and it fits the rest of them, it's wonderful! This one is a prequel, showing how Jane and Richard get together. My only complaint is that it was a short story, but for being short, it's packed full of goodness.

I'm imaging Richard as a young Sean Connery....so smooth and charming.

I really think Jessie does a fantastic job of creating "Real" characters. The way they interact with each other is so well done. I don't want to drop any spoilers, so I'll talk around what I'm about to say.....when Jane protects of the boys, that scene was awesome! And how she "plays" the ending was quite original.

For my final notes, I'll just say, for a new author she's coming out with some really well written books....I think she might be holding out on us........Can't wait to see what she writes next?!?!?!?

I started this series at the beginning, and while I had a few quibbles here and there, the ongoing storyline as well as the specific stories for each character were delightful, interesting, sexy, and refreshingly down-to-earth. This backstory novella is no different. I was so excited to hear about these two, as the glimpse we got to see of their relationship in "Son of a Duke" was hilarious and heartwarming. I actually wanted more. While the novella explained everything just fine, I wanted a full-length novel so I could enjoy more of Jessie Clever's wit. Plus, I wanted more of Jane and Richard! They're adorable!

For the nitty gritty details: historical detail is there, but not overbearing. Storyline is detailed, and a bit less confusing than the storylines in the first two books (which I enjoyed, but I got lost a few times and had to re-read, which was no problem, as I enjoyed the re-reading). Villains are interesting, but two-dimensional. They really come second to the character development and romantic relationships. Sex scenes are both sweet and steamy. Sex is romantic and vanilla, not kinky. HEA is very satisfying.

I CANNOT WAIT for the next in the series. Please hurry up writing it, Jessie!
