I "purchased" this book because it was free on Amazon, and I've been wanting some military Sci-Fi. For someone who cut their teeth on Dorsai and Hammer's Slammers, this wasn't up to that level. Still, I did enjoy the story, as I have always enjoyed a "boot camp to battle" story line akin to Starship Troopers. I also enjoyed the references to Chesty Puller and other links to the past of the USMC. And I got a good chuckle from the designation of the TCA Suits.
I also would like to note the lack of simple grammar and spelling mistakes that can jar my reading experience. I'm no literary pillar of excellence, but an abundance of these tends to put me off. It is something that can abound in an independent writer, and I was happy to see that this book was free of them.
One nitpick.. don't call Marines "Soldiers". I understand they don't appreciate that.
Over all I think it's a simple story that could use more depth. More character development and more history and setting information. Finally, I looked into the next books, but I think, for me anyway, they are overpriced for the length of the books. At $1-2, I would snap them up just for the story and the pace of the reading.
Editing was spotty with homonyms swapping around often, missing words on occasion and other little irritants.
The problem I have is that I don't care to be proselytized to in a SciFi book CONSTANTLY! My relationship with my Creator is personnel and I HATE having someone else's faith of choice shoved down my throat throughout a mediocre novella.
Not interested in continuing to read this series or this author.
This new series is starting off right. I can't wait for it to develop. I am 68 yrs. old and have been reading science fiction since I learned to read. This whole series is some of the best I've ever read. Thank you Andrew and Lori.

The review by ktesis' sums it up very well, so I have nothing worthwhile to add - go read that!
