Famous Plus One+ technology
This Primus polypropylene woofer delivers solid, punchy bass, thanks to Infinity's proprietary Plus One+ woofer design. Infinity extends the cone right up to the edge of the basket, giving you lots of surface area — and a bigger cone means more bass when your music needs it.
6X9” 3-Way Coaxial Car Speakers
Treat yourself to an upgrade
When the thrill of owning a new (or new-to-you) car wears off, there's one sure-fire way to bring the excitement back to your drive. Install Infinity's Primus PR9613is 6-1/2" 3-way speakers in your doors and say goodbye to the uninspired vocals, muddy cymbals, and flabby bass of your factory sound. Lifelike vocals, crisp cymbals, and well-defined bass await you.
Edge-driven tweeter design
Infinity employs an edge-driven design in their soft dome tweeter for a smoother, more open response and minimal distortion at high volume. With the addition of a piezo supertweeter in this 3-way speaker, prepare for a more clearly defined soundstage as the details in your music come alive.

You will receive an adaptor ring (most speakers will have you buy this separately for $10+ dollars), foam inserts that go between the back of the adaptor ring and the car metal, and also foam inserts for between the back of the speaker and the adaptor ring itself. I was very happy with this attention to detail to reduce/eliminate any possible rattles coming from direct contact of 2 hard materials.
The tweeter rotates to point up to your listening level. There is a switch to boost the tweeter output by +3 decibels. I used this feature (+3 setting) and there is no harshness or ringing from the tweeters. They sound amazing , clear and cut through with awesome clarity. I installed these with (4) 1" wafer/pan head metal screws (bought a box at home depot, they are also great for hanging pictures in your house) and it fit through the holes PERFECTLY without the heads pinching the oversized rubber surround. Make sure you measure twice, mark your holes with a Sharpie, and drill ONCE. There was no problem with speaker depth, the window rolls down fully, no problems. I used plain 18 gauge speaker wire bought from Home Depot for about $8 for 50 feet, I have a ton left over. I highly recommend a GearWrench panel removal tool and a Craftsman Professional wire stripper/crimper for the job, they paid for themselves and are great quality tools to have handy.
The bass output is right on par with the stock speaker (at all settings). I have bass on the headunit set to -4 because I have an 8" bazooka in the back that is more than sufficient to hit the low notes. This reduction in bass demand from my front stage reduces wasted power and lets the speakers get much louder in the mid-high range. I have treble set to +1. The sound is not hollow and nothing is missing. I would highly recommend a small/compact sub for under your seat to accomplish this, or a bazooka if you can afford to lose the space (I would recommend 10" bazooka if you have a car with a trunk). I can listen to this stereo for hours in the car without ear fatigue, and without my ears getting used to the volume and wishing it would go louder. These tweeters hit amazing volume levels and clarity of all instruments: snare drums, regular drums, guitars, violins, and VOICES, are SO clear! These speakers will truly satisfy your thirst for loudness AND clarity. You do not have to spend a fortune. You do not need a powerful external amp and pay hundreds of dollars for someone to install it.
If you can afford a little more money, and have more time to wire a crossover network (located possibly under your car seat or behind glove box-- NOT in car door, they will rattle around) I would HIGHLY recommend buying the component set of these speakers to have tweeters closer to your ears. (I still have the stock tweeters in my car hooked up and combined with these in the doors, I basically have average tweeters by my ears, but combined with exceptional tweeters aimed at me from the floor level).
I'm truly impressed with the entire Reference line. I've bought countless speakers over the years and for one reason or another. Depending on the time, the budget may have allowed very little or left some room to splurge, but good quality sound has always been very important. I've always steered away from the cheaper brands or anything that might have a skeleton on the grill. Any I've heard were "get what you pay for" quality at best. When money was tight, I've always looked for Pioneer, Kenwood or Clarion. They'll usually provide the average listener a sound they'll be happy with even in the lower price range. But this purchase was specifically for me. I wanted something better and was trying to incorporate a factory amp into the new stereo build. Not necessarily to save money, but more because newer cars are getting more and more difficult to work around some of the factory components. The factory speakers were all 2ohm, so I went searching to see if something other than a sub was available with 2 ohms. That's what led me to the Infinity Reference line.
These speakers fall right about in the center of "cheap crap" and "you spent what on a car speaker?". Very affordable and worth a try. The results were unbelievable. Clarity and imaging I didn't know was possible in a car stereo. I was so impressed, I bought a set of the Reference tweeters for the dash (An absolute 5 star product as well) and a week later a pair of 6x9's for the rear and an 8" reference sub. I did have to dust off the old school Hi-Fonics Odin I've had in the garage for the last 15 years to run the sub, but the rest is running off the factory amp. I did install a new head unit as well that gave me some crossover options for the new install, but I believe even without it these would sound incredible. With it however, this combination is one of the finest car stereos systems I've ever heard. I'm shocked every time I listen to something new. The clarity blows my mind and again, I didn't thing it was possible to hear imaging like this in a car. In my younger days, (ie. young and dumb) I had a thumping system in every car I owned. They were loud and shook things, but still sounded good. Now, after years of driving around a work truck with a work truck stereo and looking at 40 in the rear view mirror, it was finally time for Dad to build something for himself again. I wanted something that simply sounded accurate, crisp and clear at any volume. What I ended up with will not only satisfy the most demanding listener, it will also make the kids go "Damn..... how do I get this in my Car". I'd say for the price, I cant recommend the Infinity Reference line enough, but that would insinuate they are still lacking something. If I would have paid 3 times more for these, I'd still say the same thing. There are surely better speakers out there, but in my opinion, the car environment introduces so many sound degrading variables, spending more money on something else would be a complete waste of money. Unless your parked with your engine off and listening with a very critical ear, you won't hear better.
Pro's:
- 2 ohm operation. I love this about these speakers, less resistance means more watts to them which makes them louder than my Kenwood 69's in the back
- Swivel tweeter I haven't noticed a huge difference in sound from pointing these tweeters at me, but i can't complain and the fact that i know they face me is assuring although i couldn't tell a bunch from the switch on the tweeter how much louder it got.
- These speakers can be pretty loud and have excellent highs and decent bass (see cons)
Con's:
- Having no hardware supplied wasn't a huge deal for me since i had some spare bolts laying around, but if i didn't that is a minor inconvenience
- One of my biggest complaints about these speakers is the bass response. When there is no HPF applied these distorted bass at fairly low volume which surprised me. Luckily most of my bass is supplied by my 6x9's, but without the 200Hz HPF i have on my amp i wouldn't be able to use almost half of what these speakers have to offer. I think a 100 or 150Hz HPF could also work well but mine is not adjustable so i do with what i have and it works well enough for me.
Bottom Line:
These speakers are worth the cost and they CAN sound very good. Know how much power to give them and set them up right and you will not regret purchasing these speakers.
